has anyone simply cut down an antenna instead of buying a shorty and if so is it working fine or losing reception

..cut down to 14"..try a little at a time, check reception, cut some more..read somewhere that you shouldn't go any shorter than 14".

Don't cut the Ball end, cut from the bottom.

Hey...I just did this.

Just loosen the hex retainer nut at the top of the spring-loaded housing and the antenna pulls right out VERY easy.

Cut it down to about 18 inches...or whatever you like...put 'er back in and go. I cut mine very substantially and it still receives just fine! CB would NOT be as good...but for my purposes it works great. I am going to return my heavier "shorty" antenna to J & M and save the $40. (http://www.jmcorp.com/)

Have fun...

Another great tip on this forum. Mine always hits the darn gargage door when I back out. Good to know I can shorten it a little with no problems.
