has anyone simply cut down an antenna instead of buying a shorty and if so is it working fine or losing reception

yep,me and a buddy both cut at least foot off of our ant. and surprisingly still good reception

..cut down to 14"..try a little at a time, check reception, cut some more..read somewhere that you shouldn't go any shorter than 14".

Hey...I just did this.

Just loosen the hex retainer nut at the top of the spring-loaded housing and the antenna pulls right out VERY easy.

Cut it down to about 18 inches...or whatever you like...put 'er back in and go. I cut mine very substantially and it still receives just fine! CB would NOT be as good...but for my purposes it works great. I am going to return my heavier "shorty" antenna to J & M and save the $40. (http://www.jmcorp.com/)

Another great tip on this forum. Mine always hits the darn gargage door when I back out. Good to know I can shorten it a little with no problems.
