I need some assistance from the experts here. I have a 2003 Road King Classic with some transmission issues. It is stuck in 3rd gear at the moment. I have disconnected the shift linkage at the transmission and the lever freely spins. I had a better lever installed about 4-5000 miles ago due to the shift lever stripping out. I do have a factory service manual and a fair amount of tools, but as I just moved they are in storage. I really don't want to take it to the dealership and get drug over the coals so any help will be appreciated.
Pulled the top cover and everything looked good. I decided to check the bolts on the better lever. It appears that they were not installed using lock-tite. I put almost a full turn on each to get them snug. Next step is to get some lock-tite and re-install them properly. I am glad it was a simple problem this time, the last major transmission issue cost over $1500 to fix.
