Default Gauge question...

Posted this also in the Electrica forum...

Hello fellow riders,
l am able to score a complete gauge set from a FLHT CVO (silver face gauge) for a more then reasonable price (and with KMH instead of MPH which is more practical here..) . The seller says that this fits 2004-2009 model and l owned a 2003 FLHTCUI. Would this still work? and if not, why ?? (size, connection, wiring...you tell me..)

Thanks for your knowledge

Should work but if his bike had ABS and yours doesn't the ABS light will be on always. I've heard you take gauge apart to disable ABS light.

I don't think the speedometer and tachometer will work. I believe the connectors are different, but more importantly, the electrical/wiring system changed significantly with the 2004 models when they went to the serial data bus system. Prior to 2004, the speedometer stored the bike's total mileage and starting in 2004 the information is stored in the ECM. That's why you'll notice a lot of the speedometers show as being compatible with 2000-2003 models but the 2004 and later models are grouped separately. It's not limited to the gauges, you'll notice similar model year groupings for things like ignition modules also. The smaller gauges such as the fuel, voltage, oil pressure and air temperature will work as they have the same connectors.

**THIS MAN SPEAKS THE TRUTH*** Wiring from 2003 to 2004 is completely different. Not even the same color wire to same function. Low fuel idiot light is located on the Tach in 2003 and is on the speedo in 2004 (as just one exemple. The other gauges are the same. Since l had already bought the set and i love it so much , l opened the tach and speedo from both set and made one compatible for my 2003 EG. l had to sacrifige the fuel idiot light (never saw it anyway..) Quite happy with the result.

Glad you got it to work. Where there's a will there's a way.
