Got a 2012 limited with 40K miles on it..took it in for a new rear tire and the service folks said I had a main drive gear going out...
I have had more than my share of problems with this bike and finally thought all that was over. 5K engine change...30K another engine (crank bushings worn out), just as warranty ran out by one day...rebuilt by dealer.
Oil blowing out of intake and clutch slipping after the rebuild. Installed new clutch and install Arlen Ness air filter backing plate to keep the oil off the bike. dealer says it has too much oil in it...3 dots on the oil stick is just about too low for me...anyway...
Got all those issues resolved...9000 trouble free miles later...a different dealer says I have a main drive gear going out.
Bike is pretty much stock with a screamin eagle race tuner on it by a harley dealer. Stock headers, supertrapp exhaust...K&N air filter
I have been hearing some whining down there but thought it was the compensator...
Anybody else see this issue...or have any ideas what causes this to go out.
Any suggestions, help would be greatly appreciated.
I do not race or do burn outs...I ride...touring 2 up most of the time. 1500 mile trip in 3-4 days is a piece of cake for me.
I have stuck with this HD bike...even with all the problems, cause I really like it...but it is getting the best of me with constant problems.
About time to trade but money holding me back on that.
Poor bearing design for starters. It is a double row bearing with 2 separate races. Helical cut gears cause a condition known as axial thrust which means the the mainshaft and counter shaft are forced away from each other. Harley retains their door bearings with snap rings that are insufficient in keep the shafts in place which puts undo stress on the main drive gear and the inner race of the bearing. The inner race heats up melts the plastic bearing cage and then the ***** go every where. I'll snap some photos to show you the bearing design.

Thanks for the input and the photos...
I am Kinda doubting the dealer service as I never been there before...original purchase dealer never said a word about this problem, but it has been almost a year since I rolled into a dealership for any service.
Any idea what kind of noise this makes when it going out...whine, medium to high pitch when you left off the gas or coasting down hills...down shifting as you come to a red light?
I almost want a second opinion on this problem from another dealer...but not sure how to go about that...without getting smoked.
"Hey ride my bike to see if you can find a problem?" They always can find something to work on...and separate you from your money.
I have about decided...it is best to trade every 2 years...let the dealers deal with the problems. Only problem is to be able to afford to do that.
Thanks again
Perfect...many thanks
I have jacked up the back end...spun the wheel, all I hear is the brake shoes dragging a little...cranked it put it in gear...do not hear nothing terrible odd...
The hill should reveal the problem...if it exist.
Thanks again.
Just got back from a little ride...
Rode the bike to get it up to operating temp...
First pass...just pulled in the clutch and hit the kill switch...coasted down the hill...sounded like a big bicycle rolling down the hill. No gear noise, nothing but wind.
2nd pass, shifted into neutral...same thing...coasted down the hill like a bicycle. Staying with traffice 30-35 MPH...about 2-300 yards to the bottom of the hill.
I suspect there is no problem with my drive gear...
Many thanks for your help.
