my sporty is a little tricky. some times I have to let clutch out a little in first gear and try again. also the primary chain adjustment can cause this ive heard?
Same here. With my old Fatboy I had to let out the clutch till the bike just started to pull forward, pull in the clutch lever, and then it would pop right into neutral. Otherwise, I could never get that bike into neutral.
try lifting up with the top of your foot not your toe,get your foot almost completely under shift lever then lift up ,the toe of your foot is hard to control how far your foot sweeps and your going past neutral to second....at first I use to have same problem til I learned what I was doing wrong .....works perfect everytime now....
Mine goes into neutral so much easier since I changed from the stock shift rod to a chrome one with Heim Joints. Dont know if it can help you, but it is night and day for me.
I must be facing True North and wearing a Yankee's Baseball Cap while holding three fingers on my front brake lever and using four to pump the clutch lever 3.25 times if I am also wearing my Red Wing Dock Boots...then no problem.
Taterdog my Kansas brother you have been around here long enough to know we don't live with anything on this forum! The book says to back off your cable adjustment( in front of the motor) until there is a large amount of free play at the clutch lever. I usually run it in until I have at least a 1/4 to 1/2of the adjustment back for future use. Take the clutch basket inspectioncover off and you will see a 11/16 nut with a 1/4 allen adjustment in the center of it. Break the jam nut loose on the center of the clutch basket and run the 1/4 allen in until it is "lightly seated" I call it snug then back it out a 1/4 to 1/2 turn and tighten the jam nut is what the book says. Then squeeze your clutch lever 3 times and verify that the cable ends are seated back up on the cable adjustment. Adjust your cable until there is 1/16 to 1/8" free play. Tighten everything up get a cold beer and burn one if you are a smoker. Call me in the morning and tell me how easy neutral is to find now!! Page 6-5 in the book for my 99 is where this great wisdom is found or clutch adjustment in yours.
Any clutch drag willcause this and because we use a wet type clutch system, what primaryoil we use has an affect on the clutch drag when disengaged due to the viscous action of the oil between the rotating and nonrotatingclutch discs. Thisis why we hear that bad clunk when shifting into gear and most difficult to get in neutral when bike is cold and oil is mostviscous. If youknow itis not a clutch adjustment problem, I would experiment with different primary oils, favoring the lower weight, less viscous types, it appears that what oil we use in the primary is not as critical as the engine or transmission.
When I had my Dyna I had changed the primary fluid and had over filled it. Made finding N very hard. I droped the fluid out again, this time I measured it out and filled and everything was fine.
