Default Primary Overfill???

I know there are a number of posts on this subject and I've read most of the ones I could find. My apologies if this is redundant but still unclear on an answer.

I just did a complete outer and inner primary removal/replacement on my 05 EGC. (had to get to a stripped inner shifter lever)
Upon refilling the primary, which every other time I've ever done a fluid change usually takes about a quart which brings the level right up to the bottom of the clutch, bike straight up and NOT on jiffy stand as the manual says.

This time, I poured in the quart, not even close to being visible to the bottom of the basket. Grabbed another quart... started pouring that in, got about a quarter into that quart, still not visible. Ended up pouring, checking, pouring, checking until the entire second quart went in. Only then could I see the level at the bottom of the basket.
Does 64 ounces sound right????? I checked both the crankcase oil and the tranny oil and they were right were they were supposed to be.

Thanks in advance for any help or advise here!!!!

If I remember correctly if you pull the entire housing and not just the inspection cover it is 45 ounces instead of 32

Pull Clyde's dip sticks and see if the engine or tranny are over full. Bad seal maybe.

Checked levels in both the crankcase and the tranny and they're both right where they're supposed to be...

You mentioned bottom of the basket. This is where you should fill to, bottom of the spring. I don't have a 2005 manual but 2011 and 12 and 15 manuals all say 45oz for dry and 32oz for wet. Dry is when you take the case off, like you did and wet is just drain and fill at the inspection cover.

Thanks Vernal! Yeah... that's about where I'm at looking through the derby cover. And that was after pouring in the 2 quarts! Now just to be clear, I removed the entire inner and outer primary, compensator, clutch, primary chain etc.

That's what they call dry, no oil left in the bottom of the case. Should only take 45 oz's.

Are you sure those were full bottles of oil you started with, and not partially filled bottles you pulled off the shelf?

If that's where your oil level is with the bike standing up then your over full. That's the full mark on the jiffy stand.

2010 Limited with some stuff
