I have used both on various Ultras. They both work just as well for me once installed. I currently have the adjustable one, but I have never changed the adjustment. The main reason I have it is that it is more easily removed from the bike. I have a weak right hand, due to the fact I broke it, and cannot grip the non-adjustable one tight enough to remove it without pain! I mean actual hand pain! So I had to step up to the adjustable for the shear ease of it's removal.
I purchased it on eBay for $175.00 shipped. If you are willing to be patient and wait for a deal you can get one for the same price or less as the non-adjustable model.
Had both, prefer the non-adjustable as the mount has mounting holes drilled so I can move the entire unit back. The adjustable leans back, but from a single pivot point that if it works is great, but if too far forward, makes it hard to adjust properly. If I had the adjustable again, I'd probably drill new mounting holes and move it back an inch.
Had a grasshopper as well, worked okay but both H-D are better.
I have the adjustable on my Ultra. Love every minute of it. I have a really bad back and before having the backrest my mid to lower back would be screaming eventually shifting to between my shoulder blades as well. Now I have no back pain. The instructions for the adjustable backrest flat out suck. But once you take a look at it, it goes on fairly easy. No parts of the bike have to be modified to make it work. I will say make sure the bike is cool if you have big hands as working around that hot rear cylinder was no fun for my hands. I actually use the adjustment quite a bit while riding. For around town riding I like it more upright. When I get out on the interstate I like to lean it back a bit.
I only use backrest for very long extended trips. I used the HD adjustable one(#2) on a 4400 mile ride out west once. I liked the HD backrest and it had plenty of adjustability more than any I know of. My only grip with the HD adj was when boarding the bike the backrest wouldn't retract fully flat for mounting bike. I no longer have the HD and now have the Mustang. The Mustang will lay down flat which I like.
