Just curious, come spring or perhaps earlier I will be in the market for a new bike. I have considered the 06's EG Classic or Road Glide. But all of the issues I hear due to the new CATS installed and extreme lack of maps available make me want to shy away to an 05. The 06's sure have some imporvements though which are attractive to me. The only BIG downfall are the lack of maps etc and stealers not having any direction from the MOCO on what to do for remaps on pipes. Yes, I know the MOCO wont't support or provide maps for say, Samson Rolled Thunder pipes.
I don't know much about the maps and/or the 06's since I just bought my first Harley a couple of months ago. I do know I am very happy with the choice I made when I bought my 05 Road Glide. As several people have said, this is one of Harley's best kept secrets, but word is evidently getting out because a lot of people seem to be at least talking about Road Glides. Since I just bought mine, I haven't investigated the difference between the 05 and 06, knowing I will have my current bike for many years.
I know just from reading this forum, that there are all the upgrades, methods (PC, Sert, downloads, etc.), and aftermarket pipes that you would ever want to consider for the 05's and older models.
Perhaps someone with a lot more Harley knowledge than I currently have can be of assistance.
if i were you i would wait until you're ready. by then there might be available maps or a fix or a bypass for the 06's....make your decision when you are closer to being able to ride again
You don't have to rush to buy the bike. If the only thing that is stopping you from buying the 06 is the maps issue, then buy it and ride it stock until they have the maps available. You might want to consider the Power Commander and talk to the tech support guys at Dynojet. They might already have maps for the 06's and then it's a moog point. Go with your gut, but keep in mind, that the bike runs just fine with stock pipes on it. Paitence is a virtue.....relax....
Add the SE race tuner and you won't be dependent on factory maps. Actually the race tuner isn't anything you add to the bike. It's the software that HD uses to create ECM maps, along with an interface for your laptop that marrys the first ECM it meets. So you can't use it on any other bike. The documentation that comes with it is superb. I't took me from wondering if I might have been better off sticking with a carb to a solid working understanding of this whole EFI thing. Even if you don't care to get into tuning it yourself the aftermarket guys are giving the race tuner great support and the dealers with dynos can custom map any configuration.
