Default Engine temp

I use a power vision and I set the home screen as engine temp and mpg's. My engine temp at 70mph on a 70 degree day is 250 degrees. If I bump it up to 80mph, my engine temp will climb to 270ish. My question is, are the rest of you getting similar readings on your bikes? 1 up riding.

2011 Road King 103ci, Woods TW777 cams, SYN 3, 2 into 1 pipe, SE air cleaner. The bike has not been dyno tuned. Just a canned map.

Thanks
Sam

I always say, if you measure it, you will freak out/obsess about it. You dont see many posts like this in the Softail forum, unless they've added a gauge or a PV.

Thats not measuring your oil temperature, which would be much lower.

Dont freak out, ride, relax, etc.

If you measure it, you will freak out. That is a true statement.

So the trick to decreasing the heat on my motor is to unhook my power vision. Consider it done!

Or change the engine temp gauge to something else - like the one that tells you what gear your in...I love my PV hooked up to the bike, it is the most accurate for fuel consumption and MPG on the trip setting

So I used to get reading like that until I changed a few things, Oil cooler thermostat changed, Wards Fans installed, CAT pipes changed to non CAT, Dyno Tuned.

Using my H-D oil temp dipstick I am now reading 205-230 on a 92 degree day here in South Texas, yesterday the "feel like" was 107, the bike never went above 220.

Also using Amsoil.

Keep in mind that the PV is reading the temp sensor at the rear of the front jug. It's not reading oil temp. Without fairing lowers that temp is going to be a little higher than if you have lowers channeling air into that area.

The readings you are getting are pretty much normal. Don't pay any attention to it until you are stopped. Then you'll know about when your ETMS is going to kick in

==========================

I have oil temp (not engine temp) and today in 96 deg HHH temp i was riding 2hrs & 45mins (just under 3hrs) at 60 @ 2500rpm in 5th to 70 mph at times in 6th & highest oil temp got was 205b ,but oil temp was 190-195 deg 98% of the time.

Oil temp used to run 235-240 deg in same outside airtemp cond & speed untill i installed wards cooling fans along with a Ultracool oil cooler with dual elec cooling fans that reduced oil temp 50+ deg .

Installing those 2 great systems at the same time to cool the heads & upper cyls (top end ) of motor and the oil too resulted in the following great improvements to the motors perf esp in summer cond being by far the best money i spent on the bike thus far:

NOTE;MY BIKE IS AN 09 FLHTCU WITH BASICALLY STOCK 96" MOTOR
RUNNING SPECTRO'S HVY DTY 20W-50 STD DINO .

* MOTOR RETAINS CONSIDERABLY MORE POWER.

* THROTTLE RESPONSE REMAINS CRISP & TRQY.

* MOTOR STOPPED DETONATING WHEN UNDER LOAD ON 91 OCTANE FUEL HD REC'S FOR MY STOCK 96" MOTOR WITH 9.2 COMPRESSION.

* OIL PRESSURE STAYS CONSIDERABLY HIGHER THEN IT USED TO WHEN HOT @ IDLE (5-7LBS MORE) AND (10-12 LBS MORE ) AT 2500-2600 RPM CRUISE.

* VALVE TRAIN IS QUIETER TOO.

* SEEM'S TO BE A BIT LESS HEAT COMING FROM THE MOTOR SO MORE COMFY RIDE ON A HOT DAY.

BTW,Last wk in was in NH @ Hampton Beach where i got stuck in a bad traffic jam for 1hr 15 mins just creeping along in 1st gear every once in a while till i could get off the road in 92 deg heat sitting still most of the time.

And while sitting still in that bad traffic jam in 90+ deg HHH heat the oil temp with wards cooling fans & the dual elec cooling fans on the ultra cool oil cooler all going full blast for 1hr 15mins sitting still most of the time maxed oil temp at 235-240 deg never once going past 240 deg.

After encountering that bad traffic jam in 90+ deg HHH i am confident i have a great cooling system for my HD that can only help extend the srvc life of motor & associated items/parts.

And another good thing about those 2 cooling systems are is they are independent of each other while also being totally automatic turning on & off as required by themselves too.

Wish i had engine/head temp data for before and after i installed the 2 cooling systems which unfortunately i dont have.

But i am 100% sure that with oil temp being reduced 50+ deg on hot days by the 2 cooling systems i installed motor temp would also be reduced by a significant amount at the same time too,by how much i dont know.

So if anyone knows approx how much engine temp would be reduced for every deg oil temp is reduced on avg on a lrg air cooled v-twin bike motor like an HD on a hot day pls chime in .

And if possible also include an est of approx how much engine temp would be reduced when oil temp is reduced 50+ deg.

Scott

I have no idea what "normal" is but this is what mine looked like this afternoon:

AAT - 102
IAT - 159.90
Coolant T - 176
ET - 223
HT - 256

This was at 70 mph on the freeway.
