I coughed up the $$ for the heavy duty chrome hinges. I removed the tourpak lid and sat in a chair 10 feet away to check the alignment of the tourpak base. Well darn it don't you know that it's crooked - no hinges involved.

I thought the mounting frame might be bent, but on closer inspection I discovered that the metal "washers" (rectangular thingies flat on on side and round on the other side to conform to the tubes of the mounting frame) had been installed in "random" locations. Some were on top of the tubes and some below. Clearly this is twisting the tourpak (and that would affect the lid fit).

My question is this: are the "washers" supposed to sit on top of the frame between it and the tourpak, or below the frame to spread the load of the nuts?

I'm guessing the latter.

I'm pretty sure I've answered my own question: the "washers" go beneath the tubes, not between the tubes and the tourpak. There are channels on the fiberglass that fit the tubes and snug the tourpak in the correct orientation.

Guess what - my lid fits properly now.

All I have to do is decide whether or not to keep the fancy chrome hinges!

As an aside, funny how things work out sometime: I started to drill out the rivets on the old hinges and my battery powered drill went dead. So while it was charging I decided to have a close look at the mount and that's when I discovered the incorrect installation. Usually for me, I'd have drilled out all the rivets THEN discovered that the base mount was the problem

One of the handiest tools out there for figgerin' out what goes where is a parts manual...the MoCo sells one but ya don't need it...go to Ronnie's HD website and access their parts drawings for your bike. You will also notice that their parts are substantially less expensive than MSRP! Very handy tool the next time you need to know the order of parts...

Good suggestion.

I've used Ronnie's before but it didn't occur to me this time. Fortunately Ronnie's exploded parts diagram agrees with what I've already done

I agree - their prices are very competitive especially if you have a lot to order to overcome the shipping charges.

Put the upgraded hinges on. You won't regret it.

Never would have thought of that!

Keep the good latches.

Couldn't afford the latches - I just bought the hinges.

I returned the hinges today and got some oil and a filter in exchange. I handed over an additional $14!
