go to lowes and get you a pack of brass 1/4" inserts (3 per pack) for about $1.50 i installed this one in my center windshield screw and worked perfect.
i bought all three harley replacement inserts at the dealer after one stripped out. they work excellent. cheap. dont know why harley wouldnt put these in to begin with.
The inserts, L-R. Pressed in factory, HD replacement 16585-96, the last two are inserts I use in woodworking. The one on the end is too large, requires a 3/8" dia hole and there isn't enough meat on the fairing boss. If you install per instructions, once the insert is in you won't be getting it out. In woodworking we install em slotted end out so they can be removed with a flat bladed screwdriver. The taper shown on the instruction sheet is greatly exaggerated.

It is intended that the slotted end goes in first - it is to help cut the threads.
Funny how dealers don't know these can be replaced... I asked one dealer if they had the inserts in stock and he said "those can't be replaced, you need to replace your inner fairing, good time for a painted one". I informed him of the part number from HD and he was dumbfounded.
the ones intended for wood have the threads spaced wider apart than the ones intended for plastic as apparent in the pictures above.
That courser one is what I used that caused me to have to just drill a hole all the way through. For some reason it just broke the wall right off. Probably due to the left over epoxy still in the hole. So just in case that was it I'd suggest anyone trying it to clean the hole out as best you can before screwing in the insert.
I screwed up one on my 2010 an had the dealer put in a replacement insert. I watch the tech heat the insert with a lighter and the insert went in easy. I wanted to watch just incase I screwed another one up so I could do it myself.
Thanks all I'm going to try Epoxy first then an inner faring. Only the dice screws to take the outer off right. Three windshield and two lower inside
Three windshield screws, two on either side by the speakers and then two on either side down inside behind the triple tree. Seven total. The Rushmores are different.
