Default Luggage Rack Installation

Folks..Have any of you installed your own "Premium Tour-Pack Luggage Rack? I bought one and in the box was a templateto drill the hole locations. I have yet to figure out how that templace lays on my tour pack. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to line this template up or have most of you just eye-balled it in, which is pretty well what I am going to do should I not get an answer here.
It also says 10 pounds max but I seethem heading down the road with large loads on them...comments?

Have a safe day..

I installed mine. I looked at the template and then threw it aside. What I did was put a piece of double stick tape on the bottom of the gromet and just a little bit of silicone and I mean just a little, just enough to make it hold on the legs of the rack. Then slowly positioned the rack when you have it where you want, press down on the rack and lift it off the silicone should release and the gromets should stay. Then I used a small drill to run a pilot hole. Then you can pop off the grommets and finish up. I know I have had more than 10 pounds on mine, but you still want to be careful how you pack a bike.

Yep..throw the template away.
[ol][*]Get some blue painters tape from any hardware store or wal-mart, etc.[*]Put a couple or three pieces of tape on the tour pak in the approx area that you want the rack to mount. Make sure the tape completely covers the tour pak (length wise) and about three strips of tape wide.[*]Position the rack on top of the pak..get it exactly where you want it...remember to make sure it is EXACTLY where you want it with the lid closed and the passenger back rest mounted. There is really no (exact) placement but generally, a couple inches behind the backrest will work. Just make sure not too much rack hangs off the back of the pak and that the rak doesnt hit the backrest. One you get the rack in posistion you will see.[*]take a sharpe marker or the like and mark the 4 mounting points of the rak on the tape. once you pick up the rak you will have four circles on the tape[*]Take a very small drill bit and drill a starter hole. Dont apply too much pressure while drilling as this may splinter the pak. Let the weight of the drill be the only pressure applied. Next get a slight larger drill bit and make the hole bigger. I suggest using three drillings until you get to the proper size hole. I think its about a 1/4 inch or so...the directions included with the rack will have the dimensions.[*]After you get the holes drilled, leave the tape in place and dry fit the rak. Mount the rack, with the tap still on, and finger tighten all the mounting bolts.[*]Once you are satisfied with the positioning, remove the rack.[*]remove the tape slowly. The blue tap will not peel the paint but if there is a ragged edge where the hole are drilled, it may want to pick up the paint. So be gently when pulling the tape off.[*]Now you can permanently mount the rack.[/ol]REMEMBER....position the rack on the tape three , four, five times before you drill the holes. One hole drilled slightly out of place will make the rack not mount properly.

I mounted mine on my 2006 Ultra. I used the template. It was marked with 2 positions. 1 position if you planned to installed the tour pak spoiler, the other position if you were not going to install the spoiler. I cut out the template using the lines marked. The problem is that the all of the edges of the tour pak are rounded which makes lining up the template a best fit situation. Tape it down in several places - more is better - if it moves, you're screwed. I drilled small pilot holes then moved up in size until I got the final size. Mine worked out great. I tried laying the template on the box without cutting it out first - that doesn't work. I was really nervous about drilling a brand new tour pak - but it came out great.

I'm considering putting a rack on my RG. Hmmmmmmm, maybe I'll do another pictorial guide on how to.

Pretty much like everyone else has said, throw away the template and lay down some painters tape. Place it where you want it, mark the locations and drill the wholes. The suggestion to use the double sided tape and grommets is a good one, wish I had thought of that.

As far as the sticker that has the 10 pound weight limit, I modified my luggage rack to hold more... I took the sticker off, now it holds as much as I want it to. Just be careful of the hinges when you opne the tour pack with luggage strapped to the rack.

My next mod is going to addthe LightedSpoiler on my EG Classic. Should I do that first then add the Luggage Rack or does it matter?

The LED spoiler comes with a template with three different positions (no luggage rack, premium rack, and nostalgic rack). The premium tour pak template mounts the spoiler the most rearward of the three. If it was my bike, I would mount the LED spoiler per the template for the premium rack (if that's the rack you want) to be sure there would be room for the rack. Doing the rack first may leave you without enough room for the spoiler. JMHO. I installed the LED spoiler in the "no rack" position on my King TP since I removed the premium rack and don't intend to reinstall it. Very simple DIY project.

I used the template, but to be fair ah'm **** on stuff lahk that. Essentially, you lay it on the TP lid an' use the lines as a guideline. Others mentioned the blue masking tape - I positioned that so it'd be under the general areas of the legs, taped the rack into position an' then moved it around until I was happy with the placement. Main thing is to take yer time - if it's outta square/center, you WILL notice it from now on!! Once ya have it whar ya want it, outline the base legs with a pen, remove the rack an' drill in the center of the circles ya made outlinin' the legs.

DO take spoiler placement into account prior to mountin' the rack!!! Ah waited 'til ah had both on hand to mount 'em - cheaper than screwin' up an' buyin' a new lid...

Also - there's a product called a "star washer". It's essentially a chromed, decoratively stamped fender washer that mounts between the leg and the top of the TP, helpin' to distribute the load. Most dealers won't know what they are - you can find 'em on eBay for 10 bucks or less. They'll also come with oversized neoprene washers that go between the star washer an' the TP top to provide leak protection.
