The template is only to ensure you don't mount the rack too far aft in case you decide to add a spoiler later. The hole locations on the template mimic where the spoiler will be mounted. There are dashed lines running side to side on the template that show whee the centerline of the back lugs should be positioned. Oiece of cake. Just be sure you seal the hell out of the bolts, washers and rubber snubbers so it doesn't leak.

I threw away the template and did as most others did with tape. I measured every which way to make sure I had it on there straight before tracing the legs on the tape.
One thing that didn't help was doing this on the side stand. I didn't have a jack to get the bike up straight which would have helped when eyeballing it just before drilling. It all came out okay. Good luck.
