I want to install a premium tour rack on my O7' ultra classic. Is it hard to do and when you drill the holes should you put down masking tape for drilling the holes.
It's not a tough job at all and yes you should definitely put down masking tape. Measure it a couple of times with the supplied template and go for it. I've done several and no problem.
I installed one on my 07. I used blue painters tape and used the supplied template to position back holes. Then I used the blue tape to hold the rack in position while I measured to make sure it was positioned properly. I looked long and hard before I drilled holes. When I install on my 09, I will leave enough room between the rack and backrest cushion to get my fingers in. On my 07 it was a little close.
I have installed 3 of them over the past few years, and after the first one, I have not used the template as its a PITA
Tape the area where the rack will be, set the rack in place, measure side to side for centering, and then place front to back and measure the two rear legs to the edge ot teh tour pack for eveness. Mark with a sharpie on top of the tape by drawing around the legs. Drill and assemple. Make sure you use silicon to insure a watertight seal.

Ya, the template sucked! Did the same as Trailfndr. Looks good, used the blue tape. It's just kinda hard drilling the first hole knowing there is no return aftewards.....

Yep, the template is almost totally useless.
Here is what I did.
I used my regular drill bits, but put a piece of low adhesive painters masking tape (blue)where I was drilling and did not have any problems. I was a bit nervous about drilling on my new Ultra also so I feel your pain. I did drill one hole at a time and test fit the rack after each hole. I marked the holes with a sharpie on the tape and did not have any problems even though I was sweating the whole time. Good Luck!
Screw the template.......put it on and was more trouble than the benefit. I lined mine up on the tour-pak and put masking tape down. Once I got it lined up. outlined the holes with a pencil and drilled the first hole...the other 3 holes followed with alignment twicks......yes applied silicon during install...
Make sure you leave enough room behind the passanger's backrest, it's a common mistake to have it too close. I didn't use the template either. Put down blue painter's tape and positioned it on the tourpak. Drilled the first hole, and installed the bolt so the rack didn't slide around. Then I marked the opposite corner, and drilled and installed it. Once those two were in place, I did the other two. Kinda slow that way, but it fit perfectly.
