I agree with all who used the blue tape and disregarded the template. You'll feel more confident if you mark your holes and then remeasure a couple times before drilling. Dont forget the silicone. A little goes a long way. You don't want to get a glob on the paint. (Wipe it thoroughly, immediately, if you do.) Good idea to put a good coat of wax on the lid before starting.
Leave just a finger spacing between the rack and the backrest. That should give you room for a spoiler if you decide to add one in the future.
Last tip. I went to Home Depot and purchased self adhesive felt disks from the furniture dept. and put them over the bolt heads inside the tour-pak to keep the bolts from scratching my helmets.

Angry Forget the Template!!!

When mounting my rack, I used the template. What a mistake; should have just used only the tape, as suggested in this thread. I thought I had everything lined up front to back and side to side before drilling, but I was wrong. Darn!!! The rack is off my about 1/8-1/4 of an inch to one side.

I guess I'm too much of a perfectionist. It's obvious when comparing the alignment with the antennas, but other than that, no one will know. My wife says I'm ****, but I wanted it perfect. Guess that'll have to wait for my next bike. How much are replacement tour pack lids anyway?

what the others said plus.... make sure you have the bike sitting up straight and step back from it and look... from all angels... several times. TourPak lids are expensive if you screw it up.

Good info, I'm putting a rack on this week. I've been wrestling with this template thing, and now I think I'll just scrap it, and go with the procedures outlined above. Thanks.

When I install on my 09, I will leave enough room between the rack and backrest cushion to get my fingers in. On my 07 it was a little close.
I did the same thing, shifted it too far forward and have some trouble getting my fingers in there to attach rack bags, etc, but all in all, once you get over the anxiety from drilling holes in the lid, its a pretty simple install.

The blue painters tape works great, the other good thing is if you decide to get the new air wing led rack, it will fit in the same holes the premium rack fits in.

I used masking tape on the lid. Set the rack on the tape and drew around the tour pak legs. Drilled a very small pilot hole and then drilled the “size” hole. If I did it again I’d use a transfer punch to exactly mark the hole center.

Have done it twice. As others have said, toss the template.

If you don't have a center stand, block the jiffy so the bike is about level. Makes sighting in the rack much easier.

Also, if you have an inside lid organizer, get some slightly longer bolts and some large washers and mount the bolts through the organizer. The large washers and heads will be hidden inside pockets of your organizer and won't be seen. And your organizer will be very secure. Much better than that stupid mounting tape.
