I put one on my tourpack a couple weeks ago. I didn't use the template. Put some masking tape on the tourpack lid to protect the paint. Set the rack on the tape and center it left/right by eye. You'll want it as close to the backrest as possible without actually hitting the backrest. When you have it nicely centered, mark the four holes with pencil on the tape. Drill a small pilot hole and then set the rack over the holes to make certain they are in the exact right place before drilling to the size stated in the instructions. I did not use any sealant on the rubber washers or threads and have had no leakage yet.

jeffca, you have me confused. You say you have an FLHTCU which is an Ultra Classic which should have a King Tour Pack on it so the template should be exactly what you need for installing the premium tour pack rack but here's the way I do it without the template. Lay the rack on your tour pack and see where the holes should be hitting, then take some masking tape and lay out several strips top to bottom where the holes are going to be that you will be drilling. Then lay the rack back up on the tour pack, position it where you want itand take a pencil and trace around the four post that come in contact with the tour pack. Then start with a smaller drill bit than the hole size should be and drill you some pilot holes in the center of the circles you traced out. Then move up to the next size bit and drill the holes again and then finally use the bit size that is recommended for you final hole size.Put the black cups on the 4 post and then open the lid and install the 4 bolts and you are done.

Default Work in progress

I also have the Ultra and bought the Ultra Premium Tour Pack Lid Rack PN 79179-08 and the template that came with the kit was not for the one in the box, right, wrong or whatever. I laid the template down on some cardboard and there are only two holes in the template, not four. The template is shown with the four marks of the rack shown with the tools.

So I did what the above posters did, I used blue painting masking tape, put four pieces where I thought the holes would be, and put the rack up. I had the bike on my M/C jack stand and had the bike sitting straight up so the rack would stay on the lid. I then moved the tape as needed to center the rack on the tape and then tried to eyeball the rack to center it left to right. I moved it close but not touching the back rest, maybe about an inch away. I then traced around the base with the rack sitting on the four plastic washers. Then placed a dot in the center of the four circles. I then used a 1/16" drill to start, and then 1/4" next. The instruction say to use a 9/32" drill for three holes but I used a 17/64" drill instead. The instr say to use a 3/8" drill for the left rear hole, but I used a 5/16" drill instead. I think the instruction use a bigger drill than required to allow some error correction. I have not put mine up yet to see if I need to open the holes yet.

I also bought the light kit and installed it into the rack, but then used 3M 5200 Marine sealant to seal the wires going into the rack. It is still curing in the garage so I have not put it up to test the fit yet. I also plan on using the 3M 5200 sealant on the bolts/washers holding the rack down on the lid probably tomorrow.

My next job is to figure out how to remove the tour pack liner so I can run the wires from the light to where ever they go.

Yup...that's the best way I have found...just don't ask your wife to check to see if she agrees that it is centered properly....not unless you want to turn it into a two-day, no sex, fight...ask me how I know....

If you're going to install the lid organizer on the inside, do it at the same time.

Using the two sided tape, get it secured to the inside of the lid then drill your holes though the back side of the lid organizer. Be very careful not to go all the way though the front side of the pouches.

Then, install the bolts from inside the lid organizer through the tour pack lid and into the luggage rack.

This will secure the lid organizer to the point where you can load it up with just about anything that will fit in the pouches and it stays secure to the inside of the lid.

Easy to do as others have said. Just do it yourself.
