Default Jiffy Stand Spring Install

Last week I acquired an abandoned 1997 Road King (police).
I've been going through it and fixing all of the "wrongs" I know how while waiting on my shop manual to come in.
One simple thing that I'm not sure about is the jiffy stand spring.
I know how to replace it by removing the top stop block and swinging the stand forward to attach the spring to the stand.
What I'm not sure about is the direction of the spring or the angle it should connect.
I got it easily attached but when I brought it up and lowered it a few times the spring bent itself out of the frame.
Of all the things I've fixed on this bike I thought this would be a piece of cake but now I need to get another spring and I don't want to have the same thing happen again.
Any ideas to help this fool out?

The pictures are of a 2015 Limited. Don't know if they will help?

Uh well, nobody is perfect, but he should take it back down and do it right IMHO.

Looks to me like it will rub on the kick stand shaft and possibly jam against the frame.
If it does either of those 2, it'll eventually rub paint or chrome off to bare metal and the rust will infiltrate and could weaken the spring steel and cause eventual breakage.
I would take the time and put it back right, like what the factory did on yours, correctly.

On another thread, SoCal suggested a tutoring class
Peope said it easy to Google everything. This is an example of why it isn't. Mistakes, wrong model, etc..
I find it much easier to learn from a person, than the Internet.

I found this image posted by forum member Bobzilla. This is pretty much how the Road King spring attaches, too.
Not sure what I did wrong - unless I installed the wrong spring. It was supposed to be a 3.75" for a 94-98 Road King.
Wouldn't be the first time.
Thanks for the helpful replies y'all.
