what gaskets are you using? I dont use the V&H gaskets when I put on V&H pipes. I use the harley gaskets but I cant remember if they are the se or reg gaskets..I they look like compressed screen... I am sure someone wil have the part number...

I am going to try again tonight or tomorrow night if I find the time. I did go with aftermarket flanges and retainers. I'm wondering if the thicker flanges are causing the issue. Just can't get the pipe to sit in there snug and square. It's always off enough to cause issues.

Let us know how you make out.
Any update on your install?

Yes the inboard nut is a bear to get a torque wrench on.
The torque wrench I have is a 3/8" drive scaled in in-lbs. Maybe if I found a 1/4" drive it would be easier. My 1/4" ratchet and 1/2" socket fits in there nicely though.

I've tried double gasketing and I cannot get it so that it doesn't leak. Last night I snugged the nuts down as far as I felt comfortable (far in excess of the 120in-lbs), and it still leaks. I'm on support with V&H but it's almost like the front pipe doesn't have the correct bend. The end of the pipe wants to be further away from the bike, and slightly lower. That would make attaching to the mounting plate impossible. I dunno, never had an issue like this.

I did also change the flange on the front pipe, I left the rear alone as it's good for now. Put the OEM flange and retainer on it, and it made no discernible difference. When I take the pipe off again, I'll put the stronger flange back on.
Are you using a swivel socket (universal) and a long extension, 1/4"? You can use a step down and still use your 3/8" tq wrench- personally, I use a 1/4" everything and a good twist of the wrist on that kind of stuff. Using a 1/4" ratchet, the average guy can exert 90"lbs with a twist of his wrist-- try it sometime, it's pretty close.

Torque to spec and do not over tighten them. No problems with my 12 or 15 I just check them periodically.

Default Flange nuts won't stay tight

I have an '07 Heritage and I just had Samson true duals with cannon tip mufflers installed. After 100 miles, took it back to the shop to tighten the flange nuts. Since then, they come loose again in less than 45 miles. I'm having to tighten them every time I ride basically. The guy at the shop I took it told me to double nut them, however in my opinion this should never.. have to be done. I tighten them to 10 ft pounds, but they just will not stay tight. I also had cams, lifters, and pushrods, dyno tune done, and last night after letting the bike run for about 15 minutes it's getting a low pitch thud from the engine. I contacted Samson and they recommend a new flange and nut kit, but if that doesn't work, I'm not sure what to do about it, other than change to a different pipe style, in which case I would be out the thousand bucks I spent on the duals.

BigDog - look for Nord-Lock washers - they won't let the nut vibrate loose.

Re-torquing could/can be attributable to several things. 1. The nuts just won't stay tight and the easiest resolve could /would be to "double nut" them and there isn't really any adverse effect doing this. 2. The exhaust gasket is "sub-standard" and continues to "crush" thus rendering the connection loose. 3. Brackets/hangers and fixtures needed to keep the exhaust system stable and hanging in the appropriate location. 4. The exhaust pipe is configured ( bent ) improperly and doesn't seat properly. Most often properly positioning the exhaust pipe into the exhaust port and seating it (the pipe) squarely will resolve this issue. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I like the Nord- Lock washer post, checked them out, looks like that would be a good bet. I had contacted Samson manufacturer, they suggested this kit with the serrated nuts. Bout thirty bucks. My fear is engine damage juggling solutions. I'm a full time rider not a weekend warrior, I must have reliability. Onward ...
