Default gear lever

On the way home Wednesday bloody gear linkage arm came off the shaft the gear levers are attached to, leaving me stuck in fourth gear approaching a roundabout. Managed to stop without getting hit up the rear by the idiot car drivers following me too close.

God knows how it came off as the bolt was still done up in the clamp, and the shaft is recessed so even if the bolt is loose it shouldn't come off.

Got it sorted to get me home, and today closer inspection revealed that the splines are worn just enough to allow a bit of play. Rather than shell out for a new one I searched the alley next to my house and found an aluminium Red Bull can that had been kindly discarded by a passing degenerate, and 30 seconds with a pair of scissors fashioned a small shim and with a bit of gentle persuasion it was safely in between the clamp and splined shaft bolt snugged up tight, and the result, no play between the two and a nice positive gear shift again.

And I don't even like Red Bull.

Hmmm,

I'd expect the Red Bull repair on the side of the road, not so much at home.

That said, maybe a close inspection of the rest of the bike might be a good idea, just so nothing else falls off while you ride.

IF your talkin about the trans shaft? when the soft aluminum lets go, look at the better lever.

Well to be fair, I noticed the play in the shaft when I washing the bike the other day, checked the bolt and found it to be tight, and thought it was just the way it was. My bad.

The shim should be fine, it's only taking the place of the worn metal. Maybe if I said I turned one out of brass on the lathe then you'd take a different view, but they're both doing the same job.

I use to use the same method for shimming the King Pin on my long board trucks when I skated the mountain roads, they use to last for quite a while, and there was much more force going through them at 55 mph.

When it fails again, I'll replace the shaft and the clamp.
