Good Luck, JIM
What HDJIM said. Turn bars to the left position.(the fork locking pos.) Align the two tumblers the same way as the ingnition shaft is at the fork lock pos. Drop it in. There is a hole at the bottom of fork plate with a detent hole in it. The ignition pin at the bottom of ign., must line up to that hole. --mike GREEK POWER!

Also when you go to put the **** in the switch it is easy to remember that everything is pointed straight ahead.
This seems like the way to go?

Also homemade tool never worked on my 09 either. Always just used a screw driver.

Thanks to everyone for the advvice and suggestions. I looked at the tabs which are actually the same size, but ine side is a square tab and the other is the same except it has a beveled edge against the shank. My eyes arent as good as they used to especially looking in a little hoe with a light. Made what I thought was 1 click CW, dropped it in, turned and removed key and the forks locked. Unlock with key and try all positions and hit the starter in ON and she works.
I will get or make a tool after my road trip, even if I never remove it again, I wont be worried because I have the tool!

Very glad you got it figured out finally. That is a pain...

Next time though, just take the ignition switch out while the forks are centered, then take off the lower/center console off or whatever you're trying to get at, and then put the ignition switch right back in without touching another thing.
This way you never need a "tool" and you can move your forks back and forth if you need to while you're working.

You think you can get the fairing cap off with the forks in the locked position?

Read what I typed again. Forks centered.

Forks don't have to be physically locked to the left to pull the ignition switch.
