Default Converting SG to RG/Interconnect Harness Question

Hey guys,

I am currently in the process of collecting parts for my 2013 SG to RG conversion and I have a question to those who have already did the conversion successfully.

Did you buy the RG Interconnect Harness/Main wiring harness? Or did you use your existing one that came on your SG? If you used your existing one how did you make it work for the RG?

Thanks for your feedback!

I bought the correct harness when I did mine. It was important to me to retain factory as much a possible.

You can do either option. It would be a pain to chase down an electrical issue in that harness. Just my .02...

I extended my stock harness. Really the only things I had to extend was the harness going to the speedo and tach and indicator lights as well as the turn signals. There are a lot of wires there, but it wasn't to bad.

I guess my question to you is how comfortable are you with cutting, splicing and soldering? If you can do it with confidence, you should be good.

You will have to buy the headlight wire, it plugs in to the stock bulb connector and splits in to 2.

Another vote for the factory harness. If I remember correctly the '09 up harness was less expensive than my '08 harness.

If you decide to get into the extension on your own, you should be comfortable with cutting/soldering. I would also use adhesive lined heat shrink on each connection too. The adhesive also makes the connection waterproof. And stagger your cuts - you don't want a fat bundle of connections side by side. Staggering them will allow the harness to remain slim.

Also, regarding the headlight harness, I just checked my interconnect harness a couple days ago discussing a similar issue with another forum member. My interconnect harness has two headlight plugs on it, and I did not get the headlight splitter.

Another interesting point, I did a comparison between the 08 and 09+ harness. All the parts in the entire harnesses were identical. The only difference I could find was in the price, 09+ being cheaper. Also, I know of no changes electrically (from the interconnect harness perspective) between 08/09.

YMMV.

I've been thinking about doing this conversion to my 09 SG for about two years. It's going to happen eventually. What you guys think about this idea: Buy an 09 RG, trade parts, then sell the SG-that-used-to-be-an-RG.

(OP, sorry if I'm hijacking your thread.)

Why wouldn't you just sell the SG and keep the RG? I don't know much about resell values, but it seems to me a bike that has a SG vin number would bring more as an SG, likewise with an RG.

I asked about buying an RG then trading parts off my SG, so that I end up with an RG. Then selling the newly-configured SG. All of this is to do the SG to RG conversion without buying the RG body/gauges parts and then having a box full of SG body/gauges parts. jpj responded

Thanks for your comment, jpj. Answer is I've done a ton of customization/upgrading to my SG: motor, suspension (both ends), brakes, wheels, trans., compensator, clutch, starter & audio. I'm worried about the VIN issue.

That's the reason I did the conversion. To much in my Street Glide at the time and didn't want to totally start over. With parts and paint it was a lot less expensive than trading or buying another bike. I wasn't worried about the VIN issue because it's still a touring model, dealer also told me it wouldn't matter to them if I ever came to them for a trade. It's a fairly simple conversion and I was able to sell my Street Glide parts too.
