Default Clunk when shifting

I have a 2011 ultra , 103" and when I shift up or down I hear and feel a clunk. It's as if the shift arm is hitting something when I get to the end of my foot stoke up or down. Any ideals on a solution. The bike runs fine, with normal tranny sound.

you can move the lever and watch for interference.( like the shifters hitting the floorboards)

my guess is that you are hearing the gearsets moving in the tranny..which is normal

confirm with a stethoscope or even a long screwdriver with the handle by you ear bone- touch the tip to various areas

unlike water cooled motorcycles or cars...most of the mechanical noises are unmuffled.

alot of my machines are older- the BMW and moto guzzi also have "tractor" transmissions--- these things last many hundreds of thousands of miles

Welcome to Harley Davidson.Rare is the owner who says his Harley never clunks when shifting.I have modified my shifting linkage, made sure of clutch adjustments, tried all kinds of trans fluids and still have a clunk over half the time.Something you learn to live with.

The C designation in FLHTCUI stands for Clunk.

Get rid of the POS "self adjusting" primary chain adjuster and install a Baker manual chain adjuster. Use either Bel-Ray or Redline primary oil. Problem solved, no more clunking. There are plenty of threads on this subject. Good Luck!

it's a Harley...it's supposed to clunk. How else would you know you changed gears?

As wethead103 mentioned, Red Line w shockproof in the tranny helps. I just switched to RL and while the clunk isn't eliminated entirely, there is a big (better) difference overall and less frequent clunk.

Or any other real gear oil, not the motor oil that Harley has been using...

Default Clunk

If you shift in the sweat spot it doesn't clunk but that takes talent. Not something that you should worry about much unless it is really dramatic!
