I need a little advice from some long distance veterans . I'm going to take about a 1000 mi trip in a couple of weeks , I'm planning on a couple of 500 mi days . I'll be taking a small tool kit , leather coat , mesh jacket and rain suit plus my pesonal items . I'm torn between my 3/4 or full face helmet , I know if I see alot of rain the full face is the better choice but the heat is a factor . I'll be riding from Indy to Fort Worth . Oh ya and my knife in case some damsel needs her thong cut off . My wifes coming gotta ......................
Been there & done that 100's of times... Always pack for COLD\WET as you can always remove layers...
Leather Jacket & Chaps works well in Wet & Cool Weather...
If ya got to wear a helmet might as well make it a full face (extra protection is great)... If ya don't strap it to something...
WATER!!! Always WATER!!!
Flashlite (LED) along with your tool set- & Cel Phone (but who goes any where with out one these days) - Tire Plug Kit (if ya have alloy wheels)
Besides if your on the road there is ALWAYS a WalMart somewhere along the way....
Full face make long stretches of rian better, but some of the 3/4's have removable shields. That's what we use on trips. We have full face helmets too, but they usually only get out in the winter.
It's been raining a bunch, here lately & no sign of letting up at the moment. Preparing for rain is a good idea.
500 / day is easy. You'll find that you have much more stamina on your 1st day, so if ya can pack 600 in on day 1, you'll be glad ya did!
Ear plugs. I do long trips every year. Longest is 935 milesin one day. What was I thinking? 65 m0ore and I could have gotten Iron Butt. Someone told me that ear plugs reduce fatigue by 50%. After using them for years on long trips, I'm a believer. I like to support my back with either backrest or bags. Then. I lean back and enjoy the ride.
Ear plugs for sure and don't forget good eye protection, you don't want wind getting under your glasses and drying your eyes.I found out the hard way, rode 1100 miles in 16 hours with no ear plugs and regular sun glasses.I had triple vision in one eye because it dried severely and the wind peeled a layer off not to mention near deaf for 3 days.Even when it was quiet it sounded like I was in a factory full of noisy machines. It wasn't exhaust noise that got me,it was wind.Be safe.
I made my maiden voyage last year with the new ride and on the 2nd day we got caught in a down pour it only lasted 300mls! Anyway I was in a 1/2 helmet and goggles that fit over my glasses. It wasn't to bad because the rain stayed out of my glasses. I started this year off pretty much the same way and went full face and ear plugs much better except for the TREX I had on at the time.......... whole other storey![/align]
due 5000mi trip every year. Pack less every time I go. Chaps. Jacket, Gloves, boots.Tools. Including tire repair kit and inflator! rain gear, Gogles(wileyX), Helmet(novelty, for legal purposes only). Personal stuff.
Ride Ride Ride !!!!!!!!!
975 miles from Miami to the Cumberland Falls, Ky...I broke it up intoa 600/375mile split. The second day I was damn glad I rode the 600!!. Miami to Sturgis, well I was younger and had somethingtoprove <smilies>I rode around 750 miles a day and took enuff rain in my ears and boots to fillLake Erie.
After a few more fun runs I have learned that ear plugs and several colors of sunglasses are the way to go.Boots and maybe a pair of black hi-top sneakers changed mid-daykeep the feet happy. Tools, raingear, water, cell phone etcshould be standard road equipment...extra set of plugs too. Helmet is choice, for meNO HELMET works best if ya gotta have one on, make suredoesnt limit your perefial vision, you'll need all you got doin 80down the road !!
I bring both, I have done many thousand mile trips. In fact I'm Leaving for Tampa Florida on Wednesday. I do about 2400 miles, round trip and I have a full face and a skull cap helmetpacked.
Full face for the rainy and cold weatherand skull cap for helmet law states.
