Default Electrical Issue

Just replaced stator, regulator, and battery on 2012 Street Glide. Always keep it on a Battery Tender when not riding. Ran well for a few days but now it will not start. All I hear is click, click, click. Had the battery tested and it was good, just needed charging. It was at 187 amps. After O'Reilleys charged it, the bike started right up. The next morning, even after being connected to the battery tender overnight, I got click, click, click. It appears to me that something may be draining the battery as the bike sits and not running. Any thoughts on this?

the battery could be draining to ground through the VR if a diode has gone bad.

or you could be draining through a circuit.

pull the maxi fuse-

connect a trouble light between the battery - and the - battery cable.

the light should be off.

if it is on disconnect the VR wire to the battery +...if the light goes off, bad VR

if the light is off as in step 1...put in the maxifuse- the light will go on.

pull the fuses for the alarm and radio (which are always live)...the light should go off.

if the light is on, then pull the rest of the fuses in turn, watching for the light to go out

if the only fuses which make the light go on are radio and alarm, connect an ammeter between battery- and the -battery cable in place of teh light.

you should see no more than 1.5 amp current draw and probably much less.

what we are doing is seeing what is "on" when the bike is off.

2.) once fully discharged a battery will only recharge to 60% of it;s previous rated capacity...so a 300CCA battery can become a 180 CCA battery...even if it is just a few weeks old

a tender will maintain a battery in good condition...and will tend.
a "charger" will charge a battery- you need a 3 to 5 amp charge rate for a motorcycle battery.

so get in there and do some testing and post back the results

When you say battery tender are you implying a smart tender with a "float" technology, I think the charge that O'Reilly put on it sulfated the plates. You didn't mention if this new battery was a wet type or AGM battery.

There's a little starter relay under the seat on most Harleys, try replacing that.

I have a '12 Ultra Classic and have had electrical problems since I got the bike. I currently have 16,500 miles on it and am on the 4th voltage regulator and 3rd battery. Harley Davidson (Milwaukee and dealer) tells me the bike is fine and there is nothing wrong with it (I do not buy that). I have racked my mind trying to figure out the problem and have checked every wire / connector I can. Anyway, last month I had to replace the VR and battery at the same time. One person once told me that a bad VR or battery could affect the other. I don't know. My bike is always on a tender when I am not riding it.

Best of luck.
