Default Speedometer Acting Weird!!

Ok so Mama and Itook a ride this morning and when we were heading back I glance down at the speedometer and it reads like 40mph. The trouble is I was going at least 55 maybe 60. I don't seem to have any other symptoms. Any ideas about whatmight begoing on? Thanks

Sensor in top of tranny might need cleaning/replaced.

I took my ride for a ride and the speedometer was just fine - not a hic-up anywhere! This is weird

Speedo sensors are known for going bad, due to the metal filings in the transmission building up on them.

Thanks - I guess I won't worry about it then, until it just quits for good.

My 99 roadking speedometer has been wierd since I bought it took it back 3 times and still got the same problem. Sometimes I start her up and have no speedometer at all other times she will read 4 miles an hour at 55 and other times it will read 15 miles an hour at 55 I have even had it jump to 120 and stay there as long as your moving and it racks up the milage at the level the speedo is reading. I got tired of setting at the dealers on my days off trying to get them to fix it so now I go by my internal speedo in myhead and haven't gotten a ticket yet. I pass a speedo trap machine (shows you your speed)everyday going to work and back and I can usually hit the speedlimit within a mile or 2 an hour every time.

Bob - I struggled with the same problem for months...

Cleaned the speed sensor - worked fine (for a while).
Replaced the speed sensor - worked fine (for a while).
Checked, cleaned, and dielectric greased all conncections - worked fine (for a while).
Found some loose grounds and tightened everthing - you get the idea.

It kept getting worse - it affected the stereo volume, the odometer, and according to the wiring diagram it was probably making the fuel injectors send the wrong amount of fuel to the engine.

I finally took the originaly speed sensor, cut off the connector, and ran new wires to the speedometer. That solved the problem for good. Seems as though I had a (nearly) broken wire somewhere that just needed to be replaced.

Good luck. You'll get it eventually!
