Harley0711, I have a 14 limited with the same engine as you. I do all my own serving, stage1 install, Yaffe bars and replaced my cams. Although this is my first Harley I do a lot of reading and ask alot of stupid questions lol.

When I change oils, and I change all oils every 5000 miles I add 3 1/2 quarts to the engine, 1 quart to the trans, and 38 ounces to the primary.. And I don't even check the levels, I'm confident I have no leaks and I filled the correct holes with the correct oil I planed to. Also I never even check the oil between changes, if there is no leaks and no serious blow by (oil dripping at the air filter) the oil levels are good..iv got 22000 miles now, after you have done this a few times you will be confident also.

I read another of your posts asking about oil in the trans and primary being the same oil, in the new 103s they are totally separate but I have a 09 sportster 883 and the oil in the trans and primary are together. Meaning when I change the primary oil ( that is where the drain plug is) im changing the trans oil also.

Greg

My book says stand bike up, check level without screwing in the cap. Just put in dipstick till it makes contact.

The back side of the dip stick is smooth. Rotate the dip stick and you can see the "bulge" of oil on the stick. Then rotate it back to where you can see the level reference mark and compare. It helps if the stick has been wiped dry before the measurement is taken.

what he said. measure out proper amount. pour in. done deal. although i do check for peace of mind. never had a problem. i agree. on trany stick, its super hard to see. i have to bring it outside and spin it around in the sun with my specs on to see oil on the stick.

==================

I use spectro's trans oil (75/140) they specifically mfg'g & formulated for HD's 6 spd trans thats a nice red color & very easy to see.

Don't feel bad,i am pushing 60yrs old so i am close to being an old fart too!/LOL!!!

See below for info & link for info on the spectro trans oil for 6-spd HD trans.

Spectro Heavy Duty Platinum 6-speed Transmission Oil 1-qt
Designed by Spectro in response to complaints from Harley owners about the great but noisy new 6-speed transmission, this full synthetic provides ultimate lubrication protection. Formulated to significantly reduce gear noise and provide easier, smoother shifting, this SAE 75w140 formulation eases shifting even when cold. High loads and extreme heat do not affect the oil, so it performs well when pushed hard and long. A.P.I. GL-5 rated
