I am not a mechanic not do i know alot about motors so i want to know is the 96 just a bored out version of the 88? how did they get the bigger inches? i tried searching for this answer but no luck. if i read corectly you can either bore or stroke a motor to get it bigger if that is right, what does stroking a motor mean? thanks for any info.
My suggestion would be to direct this to the service mgr of the nearest dealership or, do a web search. When H-D introduced the engine this year, there were several on line articles written about its inner workings.
It means that the stroke (the distance the the piston travels up & down) is longer.
The bore is actually the same as an 88" TC. If you add a "big bore" kit to an 96", you end up with a 103" vs. adding a similar kit (3.875" bore) to an 88 and getting a 95".
so what does 103 stroke mean....longer pistons? sorry if this is basic info.
It would be referring to an engine that has the stroke of a 103, which is 4 3/8", and that stroke happens to be shared with the 96. The 103 gets its larger displacement from a bigger bore. The TC88 has a 4.0" stroke, and both 88 and 96 have 3.75" bores. Stroke refers to the "stroke" of the crankshaft, and is a function of piston movement, not the length of the piston itself or its diameter (bore).
