Im running an 8 inch shield on my 2012 ultra and been looking at bikes with the klockworks flares , im 5'9 and am considering a 6 inch..ive reat that size should offer the same protection as the 8 inch...anyone got some input on this?
Some Klock werks distributors have demo displays where you can try them out. Check their website to find one near you. I tried the 6" and didn't like it so I got the 8". It was a hair high so I just redrilled new holes to make it 7". It works great for me and I'm 5'7".
I bought an ultra- clear windshield off of eBay ( my original was trashed ), 8" clear with the re- curve. 57 bucks. Turns out, it's a long ride shield. Very nice , high quality windshield. I love it.
I had one on my 09 SG that I recently sold. I liked it. Looks good on the bike. I just listed it FS in the touring classifieds. Good luck with your decision. I tried about 5 different screens until I found the Flare.
I'm 5'10", I had both 6.5" & 8" KW. I just didn't like either. You're fine if you're looking over the shield but if you have to look through the recurve it's distorted.
Put the 6.5" KW on my SGS to replace the stock ws. When I 1st get on, I can see over the shield. As the day goes on and I slouch a bit, then the top is right in my line of sight so that having to constantly adjust my seating position to prevent looking thru the top curve. My biggest problem is that even when I see over it, I can't see what in front of me for a good 50'. Ive hit more potholes since the new shield than ever, simply cause I can't see them. Next spring I'm going to get the 5.5" KW.
I love my freedom shield, you can have it delivered and sent back if your not happy with the size and want to exchange or return, provided the protective wrap is not removed. Check them out. I have photos of it on my bike on my page - originally I had a 8in ordered but it ended up being way to tall for me ( I hunch) so I ended up with a 6in and the difference is night and day.
I am 5"10" and had a 6" on my 2005 Classic. Worked good, but when I got the 2012 Limited the 6" wouldn't work with the fairing mounted 660 Garmin. I ordered the 8 1/2" and found it was too high. I then lowered it to about 7" and really like it now. It is just high enough to clear the Garmin and still low enough that I can see over it.
To lower you just have to take out the three screws and start sliding the shield down until you get the height you want, then use a felt marker to mark where the holes in the shield need to be. Take out shield and drill new holes.
