Do it right the first time - big bore with cams and ported heads. Later on you will never ask yourself how the bike would perform if you would have done cams or big bore or heads.

As far as value...I went looking for an '06 or later Ultra Classic when I saw an '03. It had the SE big bore kit, SE heads, larger throttle body, cams, rineharts, Kury air intake & sert. I looked at it as saving me thousands, doubt I'll ever consider a performance upgrade. The upgrades sold me on the spot. I paid a little extra, but not close to what it would cost to do the upgrades. It made the purchase more attractive

If you are wanting to run 85mph for extended periods a 6 speed Trans would be a great upgrade! But that's a whole other conservation.

We have dealers in our area actually advertise used bikes that have our power kits in them.
Here's a NICE touring combo;
Our Stage I Heads
Andrews 26 cams
Our 98" Big Bore kit
S&S Pushrods/lifters.
Barnett clutch spring
At 9.6 cr, cool running, no compression releases needed, and with a good pipe/tune these have historically shown at/near 110 ft/lbs right where a touring machine can use it.
Want a tad more hp, and broaden out the torque curve?
Substitute the 26 for a 37, or the 57, and set the squeeze at 9.9.
Scott

Your 88 will easily run at 85 all day long, day after day. Well, your's may not but mine will and has. Still, I too am considering a big bore.
