Newbie ? ignition module

Default Newbie ? ignition module

I was reading through a site and saw 'Ignition module'. What the heck is it and do I need to add one if and when I plan on doing a cam switch or 95" build? I think HD SE part # 31765-04A is what I would need for my '05 rk custom (carb'd)? Not to expensive, but I don't even know what it is and what I would need it for. Help a brother out. I want to take my bike to 95" whenI can afford it. Saw a gear driven cam, S&S 510g that I think I can swing to put on in the nearer future than the build. Should I do the cam and be okay to do the 95" later on (during next winter)? What, if anything, will going to this cam and switching the ignition module accomplish. I am really new to this, and don't want to add a part, only having to replace it later with something else. Thanks folks, let me know your thoughts. PLEASE!!!

It is my understanding that the module changes the spark curve and rev limit to 6200 RPM.
It is for stock compression ratio engines and will effect emissions somewhat.

Some good tuning info for us "carb" guys.
I may check into a module eventually , the price/performance ratio seems pretty good.

Thanks Mick for responding. I did go to nightrider earlier tonight and read about the module (cool site) Added the site to my favorites. . Any advise on my cam question?

Here's what I did. Got all my parts for the 95 during the summer last year, all the while keeping my bike stock (except for carb and slip-ons). Go, read up about the S&S IST (http://www.sscycle.com/), you'll wanna get it when you do your 95. I love the new 95 and don't think I would do anything different and I don't worry about anything knowing that the IST will take care of any timing issues (I know others who have used other modules who complain about their bikes pinging. They then switched to IST's and have had no pinging . . .).

Now, about your cam, I am not too sure about the 510 in an 88, but I do know that the 570 is a nice cam in the 95 and so is the 585. Someone here must know what cam is good for an 88 and also for a 95, but IMHO, you may want to leave the cam for now and get one that will perform best with your 95, rather than get something that will work well in an 88 and okay in a 95 . . . know what I mean? Not sure if I am making any sense . . .

In regards to the cam for your bike , this is a good page explaining the different grinds available for the 88/95 engine.

Not promoting andrews , just for grins , this was some good reading.
If you compare a bunch of manufacturers , you will see they are all similar in the specs and RPM ranges
I would personally lean towards the 21G type grind , because I want to make all my power down low.
The 26G is very popular in the forums , and many run it , and like it alot.
As the duration goes up in numbers , so does the power band.
The 37G is pretty hot , but takes away some power down low (with stock compresion).
You might want to wait and do the 95" first , and if you're satisfied , do the cam later or not.
Bigger inches will make more (useable) power almost always.
Just some thoughts.
