Still learning about my EVO, hence all my stupid questions.
Installing a SE-3 cam next week. Will I need to upgrade the factory ignition to take full advantage of it? On my twin cam, spark is adjustable within my tune tables, but on the EVO, its my understanding that to mess with timing you need an aftermarket kit.
So my question- Is an ignition upgrade like the S&S kit needed?

Probably not with a bolt in cam but IME one of the best things you can do to help your bike cold start is put in a Dynatek 2000p.
It's a simple unplug the stock module and plug in the Dynatek.
It's one of the first things I do when I get a new (to me) bike.

Is that still available? I only see 2000, 2000HDE, 2000i... I only see 2000p's on ebay, but i dont like used ebay stuff if I can avoid.
Thanks
Edit: Reading is fundamental. I see the E is for EFI. So its down to the 2000 and 2000i - seems the i model offers a bit more functionality I don't need. So the question still is, whats the "p" model?

The i model replaces the cam sensor and ignition module in one.
You will need either an 8 pin or 7 pin depending on what is existing in your current harness.
To determine what you have just unplug and count the pins.

Any reason not to go with the 'i' model other then price that is? Or mounting the unit outside the cam chest better for cooling?

Some people will claim heat but I think that by now the manufacturers have solved the heat problem. So no not really.
The only reason I go with the "p" is that it is much easier to install than the i.
On the other hand if you install the i then if you ever have to take the cam chest off again you have to un-wire the cam sensor instead of simply unplugging it.

If you want to, then there are many ways to do it. It just depends on how much you want to spend.
You can pick up a SE ignition module and plug it in and that will be a decent upgrade. Inexpensive and easy. But looking at what you've done to your other bikes, I suppose you don't mind spending money on getting some good stuff. Best of luck.
The 2000I comes in handy with a compression bump allowing flexible timing to control detonation, only advantage I can with a cam only install is advancing the timing to get a slight slight performance bump but needs some wiring done.
Most of us run the Ultima 2000I which has the same features because pop cans are getting harder to find along the road to cash in.

Mchad if you want one of those I have one with seven pin connectors that you can have for the cost of shipping.
I wouldn't bother if I were you as the Dynatek is a far better ignition than the Screaming Eagle one. That's why I have one in the drawer collecting dust.
