Advice about preventing repairs before they happen
If you have the tools, (some HD dealers will rent you the tools) I am sure you could do it.
Rarely does a rider leave it as is. Not saying its never done but there is always something that needs to be switched out for comfort or looks.
That's part of the fun/ addiction!

Hey Adam,
Sounds like your wife is a keeper, talking you into a new RG! It could be much worse...!
If you're considering a cam chest upgrade, I'd skip the Screamin' Eagle kit. It retains the use of the Morse link chain for the secondary cam chain. This style is what you already have, and it never stops wearing into the tensioner.
If you're doing this, and you want to keep the bike forever, then I'd say go straight to the updated parts, not Harley's band-aid fix. You can use all the new current parts (cam support plate, oil pump, roller chains, and hydraulic tensioners) for about the same price.
The kicker is that you'd need to use aftermarket conversion cams, which isn't a bad thing. If you keep the 03 an 88" engine, the Andrews 21N is a solid choice.
Lemme know if you want a parts list. I have the swap to upgraded parts documented in an Excel sheet.
The work itself is easy enough too. A service manual and the forum will be all you need to get it done.
