Default Advice about preventing repairs before they happen

Hey guys,
My eglide just hit the 30k mark. I've got a 03 model. Motor is all stock. I stay on top of the manual for what it calls for and just did a 10k service on it. While the weather is cool I've got it tore apart working on several different things to change it up more. My question is, do I need to be focused on replacing any certain mechanical parts around the 30k mark? I'm not one to fix once it's broke. I like having it ready at any time and be able to go anywhere without worry. With all the members on here I knew I would get some helpful advice on what to look at or change out in this time frame. Thanks in advance!

Time to take a look at your cam chain tensioner shoes.

friend of mine treats his 03 like you described, impressed that he leaves it alone, its got just over 60k much like mine(07). a few years ago removed tensioners and went with gear and just put a mild cam in and new stator or maybe just the cam bearings at the same time(forgot),already had a breather and mild pipes but never did any tune.

last week he just bought the fuel lines and filter ,1st battery lasted 10 years, had to re torque the comp nut once(per manuel). never changed the fork oil. spits a drop of oil now and then, had a small leak behind the rear exhaust that went away on its own..

I would probly replace a couple more things if it were me.like some sensors, some cables, fuel pump..but then again

Maybe put in the hydraulic conversion kit and be done with it.

it is easy to take these concerns too far- it's a gray area.

cam drive is a concern, aside from that follow the maint. schedules.

Otherwise you could be throwing money where it doesn;t need to be.

It you are preparing to ride across country, you pay more attention. If you are using your bike for local rides, it's less of a concern.

Thx. I'll definitely look into the cam. I recently did a lot of Maint on it. When I did the front conversion I did new forks at that time also. I'd just rather ask then guess outside what the book says. I don't ride cross country, not yet anyways. 4 kids at home and several still very young. But when the time comes to go I'll be in the wind hitting every town, lol. Just trying to avoid something I can prevent. She's a solid bike! Never let me down. I keep her right though. Wife's talking me into buying a new RG. I will never part with this bike though. Just be an addition.

Timbo, is this a diy? Or should I consult HD about this upgrade? Haven't done one before I but I do everything on my bike now.

Once you get a new bike you rarely look back. The money you get for the old one can be put in the new one to make it yours, more comfortable, ect.

Rarely does a rider leave it as is. Not saying its never done but there is always something that needs to be switched out for comfort or looks.

That's part of the fun/ addiction!

Enjoy

That's for sure. If you can't do it your self, probably ought to pay to have it done but demand the shoes as they come out. Then you will have a reference if you will ever need to do it again. Heat and time comes into play here and your shoes are brittle from 13 years.

If you can inspect, a good judgement call is when the link-pins of the chain hit the top of the shoes, the shoes are to there wear limit. However, that 13 year factor comes into play.

Don't fall for any upgrade, your bike like mine has the link chain and sprockets. The rear one cannot be replaced. So any upgrade is a roller chain and a link chain. The roller one last forever since once grooved in, it rolls like the primary tensioner. However, you will still have one link that will wear thru the tensioner since it never stops wearing.
