Default RE: just got back from the DRAGON

Guys here is my loop. This variation of it starts in Tellico Plains as at the last time I wrote it the guy I gave it to was staying there. You might can figure out different variations of it with a map.

Starting from Tellico Plains, you go over the Cherohala Skyway Hwy165
TN side to Hwy 143 NC side, coming down off the skyway you run into
Hwy 129 and go left to Deals Gap. If you make this run don't waste your time running the gap, at the store go immediately South on Hwy 28, you basically follow 28 South all the way to Franklin, but there is one break in the 28 South route, you come to a big 4 lane hwy 74/19 then go left for 2 miles and then right back on Hwy 28 south until you get to Franklin N.C. This stretch of the road is better and longer than the GAP.

Here you start following the signs to Highland NCor HWY64/28 east. This is a very scenic road and crowded unless you get through it in the early am hours.
http://www.highlandsinfo.com/

Drive thru Highlands and 28 splits back off to the south again, this is
a sweet road, you'll be on it for about 25 plus miles probably also better than the gap, look for a right hand turnand the name of the road isWar Woman, there is some little pump house there at the turn, but enjoyHWY 28 and don't start looking for it until you put some seat time in. War Woman starts out tight and then turns scenic but willeventuallybring you out to Hwy 441/23 there is sBP station on the corner. For those that may be using part of this route you will be in Clayton just down the road from Dillard.

Take a left on 441/23 and then immediately take a right on HWY76, not
sure but think it will be south. HWY 76 is very scenic. The road you'll be looking for off of HWY 76 is Hwy 197 you can only take a left on it. It takes you by Lake Burton. Sweet road very tight but scenic.

Take Hwy 197 approx 10 miles to HWY356 this road is a Nationally marked scenic Hwy, not tight just flowing and scenic and it will bring you over to Helen Ga.You pass by thethe Unicoi State Park at the end ofHWY 356 and dead end atHwy 75 at which point you can go left to go to Helen or right to Richard Russell Parkway, going to Helen would be to eat and visit http://www.helenga.org/, your loop is to go right and then the next left following the signs to Richard Russell Parkway or HWY348. Again for anyone wanting only part of the loop you will be on Hwy 75 in between Helen and Hiawassee on the map. There are alternative routes from here on main roads.

You take a Right on Richard Russell Parkway. This road takes you to almost 3K above sea level. It can be tricky with gravel but if not its a very demanding road but also scenic with several nice lookouts. When you come to the end of Richard Russell or HWY348 you will be atHwy 180 where you'll go left down to 19/129 where you'll go left againon 19 /129. Approxiamately 5 miles down this roadyou will take a right and pickup 180 again, this part of 180 takes you over to Suches Ga and T.W.O. www.twowheelsonly.comHere again you willbe at a main road and have alternativeroutes via a map. For tha matter this is the same
Hwy 19/129 that would take you all the way back to the gap if needed.

When you get to Suches go right on Hwy 60 and take it all the way to Ducktown. Go thru Ducktown and you basically just stay straight and the road turns into HWY 68 NORTH. Here you will be headed back to Tellico Plains back to where the loop started. This stretch of 68 is one of my favorite pieces of road. If you think you want morethen you can take Hwy 64 West just outside of Ducktown and goby the Ocoee River. VeryScenic but high atraffic area. Off

I was on the dragon last friday. We made it thru with no rain or rice. On the parkway we hit rain, 30ft of visibilty would be accurate. Had a group of about 30 bikes I managed to get in front before we got there and enjoy the dragon. One guy riding with us was not so lucky, he went down in the first mile . broken arm and gash on forehead, from the people that were riding behind him speed was not a factor. Maybe he hit some gravel? Our main group was from Chicago area Had some from Detroit This guy was from DC. I dont know his experince level so I dont know what the cause was. This was a ride to help wounded troops. We raised money and donated to Wounded Heroes who support wounded troops and there familes. We made it to Camp LeJeune NC to meet some wounded troops, a tour of the base and lunch with some of the troops. Alot of rain but a good cause.
