Default Radio only works when engine is off

2008 Street Glide - 30K miles.......Iron Cross radio installed in 2010 after factory unit quit
NOW
Radio started cutting on and off while riding with no warning - didn't have to hit a bump or redline, etc....just would quit....then come back on when it felt like it

Radio is working and sounds great with the engine off just sitting in the garage but will not work if I fire up the bike....

Doesn't seem like pulling the radio and shipping it to Iron Cross (for $250) is the answer since it works (kinda)

Any suggestions ? Merry Christmas to all ! Thanks

Sounds like maybe a loose connector or bad ground. I would take off the outer fairing and check for plugs that may not be all the way on or check ground. Thinking maybe when you start it that the plug maybe rattles loose. Also check for corrosion on the pins of the plugs. Just some things to check.

^^^Yepper Depper^^^

Check your connections and wiring...something's loose. Why wouldn't you think Iron Cross would assist...it's a definite problem & you're not satisfied...???

Iron Cross redid the radio and it worked great for about 4 years or so
This problem is different because the radio DOES work but only sitting in the garage! LOL
I'm going to check wiring inside the fairing
I heard a "starter relay" in the fuse box is somehow involved? Sounds weird but so do a lot of thing on Harleys!

Where are you located?

Makes me nervous when I see, and I quote " "starter relay" " in quotes.

with radio playing motor off, shake the bike...jump up and down on the seat, smack the tires with a ball bat...

if the radio stays on, repeat with motor running.

if radio stays on, pull outer fairing and manipulate the wiring ( radio on, motor off).

if radio stays on, rap the radio chassis with your knuckles.

It is possible the problem is internal to the radio- in another post, I saw where Iron Cross had traced down problems to the owners re-install of a radio which had the bottom cover plate on the radio all tore up by the bar mounts...vibrations transferred to the circuit board ...and death.
This was a radio the owner had removed to do some other mods- reinstalled ( unknowingly incorrectly) and later had teh radio fail

as far as a relay- there are relays in the bikes, you could get the correct wiring diagram and trace back what else gets power in the same circuit...if those other loads are working, then you know the power is ok.

you could try pulling and cleaning the fuse legs to get a fresh contact

If smacking the bike with a bat or replacing the starter relay doesn't help, try Brick0044's suggestions.
