Default Full-face helmet - your experience.

Temps were in the 40's today so I threw on a full-face helmet. I admit, I don't use the full-face very much if at all. It's the wife's when she rides.

I find that that the noise level is much greater when I wear a full-face helmet. I was even wearing my custom ear plugs. I normally wear a half helmet. I really liked that it was warmer but the noise level was almost unbearable.

For those of you that ride with a full-face, what is your experience on the noise levels?

It was sunny and low 50s today, so I went out riding. Had the FF as well for warmth.

It really depends on the helmet as some allow more noise than others. I have a Shoei Qwest and a Schuberth C3 Pro. The Schuberth gets the most wear when I use a FF as it is much quieter than the Shoei. I think the materials used and especially the neck/chin insulation insulates the sound, and the Schuberth does well on that.

I wear ear plugs with my half helmet and need to with the Shoei.

I have an older HJC helmet that was included when I bought my Dyna Wide Glide 5 years ago. I was thinking about getting a new helmet but would hate to drop that kind of money if the noise level was the same.

I wear 1/2 helmet unless it's cold enough to force me to put the full face on. Mine is Harley (HJC) modular and the noise is "different" than in a 1/2 helmet, but not annoying to me or anything like that. I never wear earplugs if that makes a difference. If I'm in the full face it's due to temps, and if it was noisy I'd be willing to deal with it to stay warmer.

I quite using them for that reason, but after experimenting with different helmets to me the less vents the quieter they were. I had a 3/4 with a snap on face shield and was fairly quite after I put some 1/4" foam weather seal around the edge of the shield. Certain mufflers/exhaust can make them unbearable, too.

What's odd to me is I wore a full face helmet on a Yamaha XT350 with no wind shield as a teen in the late 80's and never remember it being noisy at all.

I recieved a cheap $150 helmet when I bought my bike from the dealer. It was so much worse than other full face helmets I've worn and is extremely loud as far as wind noise. A higher tier fullface helmet usually blocks out more noise but not always. Usually its a compromise of wind noise or ventilation. The more the helmet breathes, the more likely it will be loud. I would recommend a fullface with a chin skirt as a lot of air can come up from underneath and a chin skirt can really make a difference. In my experience, any quality helmet should work good. You can search for helmets and see lots of reviews on Revzilla.com.

Yeah, my Rinehart mufflers aren't all that quiet. I'm sure they contribute to the issue. However, the mufflers are fine with ear plugs and my 1/2 helmet. Having given it more thought, I probably don't ride in cold enough weather to warrant the need of a full-face helmet but it would be nice to have the option without the increased noise.

You get what you pay for. Do some research...

I wear a SHOEI GT-Air, one of the quietest on the market. Pinlock shield, so it stays fog-free when it's cold out, which is usually when I wear it.

I paid just short of $500 for it, but worth every penny to me.

I have the Lazer Monaco modular, pretty nice helmet.

I think the old Schubert is on sale at Revzilla, like $300.

Modulars are generally not as quiet as full face helmets.
