Only time I ever joined a HOG chapter was in Florida. Have to become a national member first. Then find out where they have local chapters. Nearly certain Smokin does and know for a fact Black Bear in Wytheville does. Don't know anything about Smokin but a buddy belongs to Black Bear and seems pretty boring with poor participation.
As far as service the only shop I trust is Tilleys in Salisbury. Never had any dealings with their Statesville service department but the lead tech at Salisbury is a wizard. Best of luck and shoot me a PM if you need other local advice.
If you like the low , get it. You can change seats out to a standard seat. The handle bars are a little different , but most change those out anyway wherever it's a low or standard.
When I bought my UC I put the 12" low shocks and a seat from the UCLow. They didn't have a low model on the floor , and I am impatient.

I am too. Changing the seat out sounds like a great idea, also I wI'll have a set of foot pegs put on.
My Honda, looks like the old sportsters, it sits low but long, I love the way it fits. But, I'm 45 yrs old and I'm ready for a Harley.
I'm 5'9" and fit the standard just fine. I did test drive the low for a weekend and found it lacking in a few places. Mostly suspension! I'll take the air shocks over springs any day. If I can reach the ground on a standard, I'm sure you will be easily able to. I think you'd find the low a little cramped.
Be careful riding the low! Your ***** will be crushed!!! Think about how that seat pushes you forward. No Bueno!! I'm 5'08" and my Ultra Limited fits me just fine. I tried the low, and my nuts were aching from being squished. Besides, the low has smaller grips without heat. Use it once and you won't ever want another bike without it. I know, you can change the seat, but at 6'03", it's not the bike for him (IMHO).
Just my experience, not bashing the low. Good luck with your recovery and decision.
We've both reg and Low Limited, on good days I'm 5'8" and I feel cramped on wife's Low just in the parking lots no way I will take that bike on 500 miles days. Think Moco design that bike for the 5'6" or under riders and especially for females who want to ride a big bike.
