I have not seen this question addressed anywhere. Since the dealers have a generic dongle that they use to do general ECM downloads, and they certainly have access to the SERT software, do you need to buy SERT to have the dealer dyno tune your bike? If you do not intend on making any additional changes and you have the bike setup the way you want it, can you just take the bike in and have it dyno tuned?
I hate to have to spend the money for something I will only use once.
If you want to TUNE your HD, this means having to adjust the parameters of the ECU (assume your bike is ESPFI). One has to be able to have the means of doing so, which leaves you a lot of options, the Race Tuner being one of them, as is a PCIIIusb, etc., etc. The downloads that HD sells on a package basis, like Stage 1, Stage 2, are not adjustable.....they are programs for that particular package......and are designed to be so.
You can Dyno your bike the way it is, just to see what the output is.

Thanks FLHT, that is what I was wondering. I thought maybe, since they obviously had the ability, without a SERT, to download a new map into the ECM (like they do for the Stage I etc. ) that they could use that capability to do a dyno tune as well. Clearly the answer is no.

I had already looked into the various options, SERT, PCIIIusb, Fuel-Pak, etc. and decided that I wanted to go the SERT route if I had to buy something to get the bike dyno tuned. I don't really like the idea of an "add-on" solution but prefer the idea of actually changing the map that the ECM uses. That seems to me to be more of a "clean" solution. From a price perspective it is really not that much more. PCIIIusb is about $300. SERT (including cables) is about $385 from Zanotti. Either way I would have it dyno tuned so that is a wash. The SERT does come with pre-set maps already on the software CD that cover a large range of situations and their are maps out their that people are willing to share if you look.
Everyone has an opinion on it. Nobody is right or wrong, just different strokes for different folks...
