12ga=.080" is AWG solid copper wire gauge. Steel sheet metal gauges are even thicker. Here's a chart of steel sheet metal gauges.

I think the earlier claim that fenders are 12g is a misunderstanding! Must be much less than that, simply to make it practical to shape them. .012" is more likely IMHO.

12 thou is more like it ... 12 gauge is thicker than quality exhaust tubing ...
