At 75 mph they all look the same in the mirror. When riding with a group, we used to have only the last bike ride with the passing lamps on. This way you could easily identify that the last bike was still behind you, so everyone in the middle was also there. Good trick when you are touring with more than say three bikes. Much easier than trying to count how many bikes are behind you.
I almost always have mine on, when I had Halogen bulbs I did turn them off unless in traffic or it was dark. The Halogens sucked too much juice in my opinion. Now with LED they stay on most the time.
I Also use protection film over the passing lamps in a bright yellow color to give the bike a slightly different look to just maybe grab the attention of a vehicle operator because it is different.
