I guess I'm just too trusting. Like someone else said, for a quick overnighter, I only carry a change of clothes and my debit card. I've never needed to add oil and my pre-trip inspection of the bike should (theoretically) identify any mechanical issues.

(Also, for me, I always have at least a pocket knife, and for longer trips, I carry a gun)

I have been biking for more years than I wish to admit and haveriden in all 48 lower states ..never carried a gun .. I do carry a Buck knife .. but its not necesseraly for protection .. neve had an incident where I wish I had one ( gun ) ... I am from Montreal and ride in the states mostly .. dont think they would let me in with one anyways .. the only thing I shot in the last 20 years or so is my camera ;-))
The laws are different and so is the mentallity .. not wrong or right .. just different ..
But know that I know you guys carry your pieces with you on your rides .. I may just have to be more polite ;-))...

generally, on the longer overnight trips I carry the following:
[ol][*]Clothes[*]rainsuit (never leave home without it)[*]Toolkit[*]small pup tent[*]small fleece blanket[*]sleeping bag[*]shaving kit, towel, etc[*]leatherman tool or buck knife (always on my belt when riding)
[/ol]Also, i have discovered that if you want to take a pistol and dont have a CC permit then usually you can workaround that issue buy having the pistol in one saddlebag and the ammo/clip in the other. Now, that is the proper way to carry it...but really worthless if you need to get to it quickly. Even on a recent road trip, the HP had a license check point. I rolled up, showed my drivers license and went on my way. No need to start a bunch of crap. However, if for some reason the man want to poke around, i always say that i have a pistol and the location of the each (pistol/ammo) that way there is no problem. Of course, you will occasionally run into Barny Fife with a point to make. Be courtious, polite and let him lead the way. Even if worse come to worse, any 10$ lawyer can get you out of that pickle.

I have Hog map and cell phone,
With that and you're insurance, you've got it covered. Just enjoy the ride.

First overnighter I took I realized I worried too much.

Don't forget your registration! I photocopied our title(in reduced form) laminated it and stuck it in my w/s bag with my proof of insurance.

Extra Zip Ties and electrical tape at least!..... and I think the tool-kit that comes stock is not even worth anything. I did get 'for travel only' the little $50 windzone kit that HD sells. Has wrenches, allens, torx, eletrical tape zip ties.... vice-grips... etc. Lil pricey for all the tools being 'made in china' for the most part but .... it has helped a lot. (they even include the 10mm wrench if you need to take out your battery.... which is one of the only metric bolts you have on the bike). I keep my lil windzone in my saddle bags all the time and it has come in handy.

Down the road I think I'll replace most of those 'china' tools with Craftsman ones
