I've got a 2007 RK Custom. I've still got stock headers (no cats) driving Rush Big Louie 4" slip ons. It has a high-flow AC and a Stage 1 mapping (done via SERT). The bike runs really well.
This pic was taken pre-fairing:
It sounds good, too, but I'm looking for a little lower rumble. So I thought I'd ask for opinions. A lot of folks like the Big Louie slip ons - and they are a big improvement for me, over the Pythons that I previously had on there. So I'm kind of leaning to thinking that another round of Musical Slip-Ons isn't the right way to go. But I've heard great things about CFR (if you can get them) and RCX. But will they be a lot better than the BL's? Or, should I be looking at other things?
Like I said the stock headers have no cat (they are older than the law requiring cats). But would swapping to true dual's help or hurt? If help, which ones? I'm not building a custom bike here, I'd like like sound and performance. I've heard good things about S&S and V&H. Thoughts?
Also, I should say that I'm not really interested in swapping cams at this time. I've heard that would provide a sharper "bark", too.
I'm not looking to PO the neighbors (or LEO's) so I'm keeping baffles in my pipes. Right now, I think I have 2.5" in my BL's. I don't need a lot louder, but I'd like LOWER.
Vance and Hines Monster Ovals are pretty good, fairly deep sound and not too loud. Kuryakin makes some that sound nice too. I think they are called Thrashers. Check out their website and listen to some sound clips. Good luck.
True duals will definitely help the sound. I think Bassani makes a good set. V&H does too, but they come with an already attached muffler, I believe, so limited choice there. S&S makes a headpipe that looks similar to the 2009 and later ones, it sits lower under the engine pan so I believe you get reduced ground clearance but it is a true dual.
2 into 1's also give a deeper tone with the larger diameter mufflers, but some people don"t like pipes on one side, me I have no problem with it at all.
While you don't want cams, frankly its the best way to make great sound, and power.
I've got an '06 Road King with the 95 CI bore kit, cams, s/e breather. I have stock exhaust with Screamin Eagle slip-ons. When I got the pipes, someone had modified the baffles by cutting them down shorter. Bike sounded great and ran great. I too decided that I wanted just a little more of a deeper rumble. Spent 12 bucks on Ebay to buy some muffler packing material. Installed it yesterday and I'm super impressed. Bike sounds much deeper with a nice rumble. When you crank the throttle, it sounds different than before and in a better way. Couldn't be happier. Rained all day so no ride to try it out. Hoping for a little extra bottom end torque as well, not that it needed it. Just something to consider.
As much as I hate to recommend a V&H product out of all the mufflers that I have had the monster rounds were the deepest. The only thing that I can say is when you go for a really deep tone they drone on the highway. I have reinharts and big louies on the two bikes now. They are both different but they don't drone like the V&H's do.
I do agree with what has been stated about the cams.
