Default '07 96" upgrade question.

NEWB HERE! LOL

Ok ladies and gents. '07 96" stock touring HD. It has over a 100k miles on it. Making some nasty noises after it warms up..... not smoking or anything or even using oil Thinking its prolly lifters. Anyhooo. Got on the old interweb to order me some some lifters, rings, gaskets..etc got to thinking. Maybe i will just see how much to upgrade her a lil without going broke. Here's what im thinking.

S&S 106" BB kit ($700) S&S 551 or 570 Cam ($290) S&S Lifters ($120)
I think I can keep the stock pushrods / any reason to replace those?

I dont really want to upgrade the heads ( well I want to but don't want to spend the money) Is it dumbass move to skip the heads for this setup?

Is there another upgrade that will give me better performance for around $1100 ??

Would I have to upgrade the clutch?

Thanks !!!!

Oh BTW it has an SE RaceTuner

Check out the Fuel Moto 107 kit. That's the set up I'm going with on my 2007 Street Glide.

If you go bigger than 96 you should add ACR. If you take the short cut, the cheap path you will end up like so many others with battery and starter issues along with possibly other more costly ones. There is a reason HD made ACR standard when they went with the 103.
regardless of the internet BS the stock clutch is fine. At 100K it may need a kit. You got your monies worth out of it.

ooh rah! Master Sgt! Former Navy Helicopter Aircrew here. '87-95 My dad and Uncle were Marines. Dad didn't talk to me for about a year after I joined the Navy LOL I tried to join the Marines but the recruiter said I would have to be a grunt first before I could go to the air side - The Navy gave me a written contract guaranteeing me a flying job LOL

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at the kit. The one with lifters is $1300. Is that the one you are going with? That setup is about $200 more than the S&S combo I was looking at with lifters. You do get the push rods with the Fuel Moto kit. I think rods are a $100 or more.

Why did you decide on this kit?

I like the 551 cams myself. In fact mine just arrived. I went with the Easy Start version as I like you do not have ACR's. I figured it was cheaper than ordering ACR'S plus wiring and then the added cost of drilling the heads to fit the ACR'S. The early releases 106 kit had some issues but I would think S&S has corrected that by now. You can use your stock pushrods but it is slightly more labor intensive as you have to pull the rocker boxes to pull them out the top as opposed to cutting them and installing adjustable ones. I'm using my stock pushrods because I'm doing the work myself. My time is cheaper than buying adjustable pushrods. I'm going with just the cams and a Power Vision for this year. 106 or 107 next year. I already have a SE aircleaner. Good luck with your build.

I was responding to E8USMCRET's post - he listed himself as a Marine Master Sgt. Smitty posted while I was still typing up my response to E8USMCRET's post. Should have used quotes to eliminate confusion. thanks

I apologize to you doors1fan, my mistake. I hope you get what your looking for. I just got a 07 Ultra with 28k on the speedo, traded a 91 Ultra in for it and it was like night and day. 07 so much better , which the newer models than mine is probably much better.
