I put a chopped lid on my king pak and this allowed me to mount the HD chopped pad and have the best of both worlds as you said. It turned out really well I thought.
I will dig up a pic.

I had actually found your pics last night doing a ton of searching and was meaning to message you about it. It's my understanding that the 2 lids are the same now, is this not correct? I'm thinking about doing exactly what you have here. My wife this morning was saying how she'd like to be able to hear the radio better, so it looks like the king in they way I am going.

Yes the dimensions in regards to width and length are the same on all the new tour paks so you can flop lids to any bottom and vice versa. I think the chopped top on the king bottom is a great way to go to sport the bike up and keep the speakers intact.
I went ahead and went with the king pack. Got it all ordered Saturday. Dealer says everything shows to be in stock and I should have everything this week sometime. Also went ahead and got the speakers/pods as well.
One thing I didn't think about or pay attention to until yesterday is the antennae. What options are available or suggested for relocating/removing?

A shorty antenna from here is an option http://www.eglidegoodies.com/id109.html. Some have gone with the hidden inside the fairing, but not sure about reception.

Reason: typo
I've got a '16 SGS also. Bought an aftermarket tour pak, but went with Harley hardware. I use it on long trips, I never ride 2 up, just single. Went with the king.
