Default Hard start / grinding SOLVED

Hey guys, I just wanted to throw this out there for anyone who is chasing a hard start / grinding issue. My bike has been having a tremendous amount of trouble starting lately. My battery is strong and I have a new compensator so I knew those weren't the issue. I bought an "All *****" starter clutch and installed it today. This bike now starts like a brand new motorcycle. I would advise anyone to check this out if you're having issues.

Thanks. I've been having a grinding/kickback issue when starting. Sounds like my starter gear is grinding. Is that what you had too?

Yep! I'm betting my bad compensator is what knocked it out.

Thanks. I have the SE compensator but my issue seems to have popped up when I did the SE255 cams a few months ago...probably doesn't help that I've put on almost 71,000 miles on the bike.

" my issue seems to have popped up when I did the SE255 cams a few months ago".

Therein lies the problem, IMHO. The 255's lift is hard on starters & starter gears, and is also prone to "hot start kickback". 255s should have ACRs installed.
I went with the 254e cams for just those reasons;it is an "upgrade" of the 255, same low-end torque as the 255s, but better midrange & HP, and none of the problems associated with the 255s. Since you already did the cams, I would get ACRs installed.

I don't know if i totally agree with that. Plenty of people with stock motors and bad starter clutches. With that being said I agree that aggressive cams and higher compression put a heavier load on the starter but aren't the root cause of starter clutch failure.

I had a grinding on my bike as well I found that most of the splines on the clutch hub where gone. It took out the inner primary bear and seal too.

I'm going to talk to the guy that did the cams about the ACR's and get a quote from the dealer as well. I wish the Indy that did the cams/tuner would have discussed the possibility that I'd need the ACR's.

Default ACRs

My big bike has ACRs but the smaller dyna not so. The dyna does have compression releases and it's just a matter of getting in the habit of pressing the button on each cylinder before startup or just after shutting down the motor. If you go with the manual ones, you don't have to put the wiring in for the electrics of the automatic ones.
Are your heads already drilled for compression releases ?

The heads are not drilled. If I'm going to have it done I'd just have the automatics put in. I can't imagine the overall cost being that much different.
