Default TBW grips not fitting

I bought a 2010 street glide that had 16" apes on it already (TBW). I'm not sure the brand of bars. I went to put new grips on but the handlebars have a step down that don't allow the throttle grip to slide all the way on. There's not enough room to get the grip all the way on to mesh with the TBW, and all the turn signal housings, before it gets to the step down in the handlebars. Anyone ran into this problem? Is there aftermarket grips that are shorter, or anything I can do besides putting new bars on that don't have the step down?

i had that problem when i added new bars and grips to my neighbors bike. He has KST bars and Avon grips. the throttle grip would not go on more than an inch and it was a tight fit. I put the stock cvo grips on and everything worked fine.
