Default Torquing rocker covers

I'm sure someone has thought of this, but figured I would pass it along.

I torqued my rocker covers "by feel" when I built my 107. This afternoon I noticed a small oil leak out of the rear rocker box so I tightened it down a little more and considered buying an adapter from Motion Pro. I found that I was able to put my 3/8 torque wrench on the end of the 7/16 box wrench at a 90 degree angle and tighten every bolt with the tank still on. I was off by at least a half turn going by feel.

Hope this helps somebody.

What wrench were you using for the initial tightening?

Would the length you are adding to the wrench not change the accuracy of the torque wrench? I would think this would add mechanical advantage... I might be way off on that, but that's how I would picture it.

Unless the adapter or extension is perpendicular to the torque wrench you're going to be way off on your torque values IIRC.

This is a good way to over torque or snap off bolts in unfortunate places IMO.

As stated in my original post, I have the torque wrench 90 degrees to the box end wrench. When you do this, the torque value is correct.

Here are instructions to MotionPro's adapter that may clarify: http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/articles/view/2794/adjustable_torque_wrench_adapter__08-0380/

You used your "adapter" correctly. That was never an issue in my mind. I am still curious as to what tool you used to get the values so far off by feel.

Good to know. I'll have to keep that trick in mind.

Got ya. I had originally torqued a bolt using a torque wrench then tightened it a bit more with a box end wrench to get a feel for how tight to go. I realize I should have done it correctly to begin with.
