Harley doesn't do any of us any favors by having the pins be soft aluminum. They deform pretty easily, and then don't lock in place securely.

I used these and would highly recommend them as a cheap solution:

I like those as no tools are required. I was looking around for some with ***** when I bought the hardware for mine.

I did the Brukus fix yesterday. A little pricy but good quality. A buddy of mine had one stolen last week. Was having lunch, came out and it was gone. Just peace of mind for me.

I changed mine not out of fear of them falling off, but as an anti-theft deterrent

Have a 2011 SG. The OEM bag clips felt a little loose but installed an adhesive type bag liner which increased the 'thickness" of the bag where the clips attach the bags. The connection is very tight. With that said, I never had any bag come loose before I added the liner. Oh, and +1 on going to any hardware store and replacing the OEM setup if you are losing sleep over it.

I think you are onto something with the thickness thing. I was thinking about it yesterday. I bet if I added a thin washer to the two of mine that felt mushy it would have made a difference. That way the pins would put more tension on the wire springs to hold them in the locked position.
