Do I have a fuel flow or engine problem? *RESOLVED (post #10)
2002 fuel injected Road King.
Rode about 100 miles yesterday, no problems. Btw, I checked the oil before yesterdays ride - all good.
Today I'm out riding and the bike sputters bad, think I might be out of gas...limp into station. Bike only takes 3.5 gallons.
Listen to fuel pump, it primes and stops (no run on). Figuring it's a fuel flow issue and I'm pretty much out of options for getting it the 7 miles home I decide to go for it...
I can keep it running by working the throttle and keeping the revs up but it sputters and backfires...occasionally i get a good run...and then back to sputtering and backfiring.
Get home, pull in garage and realize its kinda smoking...and seems really hot.
I checked for codes...no codes.
Now I'm just drinking a beer and feeling bummed...anyone got any thoughts?
Had the same symptoms with my 05. Turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator. It wasn't supplying enough pressure so it would sputter and not want to stay running unless I gave it almost full throttle.
And on mine, it was a throttle position sensor. Harley dealer in Ohio checked it for me 400 miles from home for $65. Replaced the sensor when I got back home.
I had a bad ignition wire a few years back, I would check plugs, wires, coil, fuel filter, and TPS. I would start with these things first then dig deeper if it persists.
I have a '00 fuel injected Road King. At about 60k miles it began to bog down and not rev much past 3,500 rpm before it would sputter and stall. It had had a dealer-performed 50k service, which the checklist said included the fuel filter being replaced. After having the dealership look at the stalling issue and tell me they couldn't find anything, I decided to check the fuel filter myself. Changing the filter isn't hard, it is just a PITA to get to it. I replaced the filter, and while in there replaced the in-tank fuel lines. Now the engine pops off on the first press of the starter, and freely revs up to (and beyond) the redline.
BTW, I haven't spent another nickel on service at this dealership in 3 years now.
Question, how do I check for codes on an 02 with a Delphi? Do I use the shorting of the data link connector method or the odometer method? I've searched for a difinitive answer but I'm still confused.
Btw, I tried the odometer method yesterday and it showed no codes...but now I'm thinking I might be doing it wrong for my year/model.
also check the intake manifold for a leak. My friend with his '98 dyna 88 ci. started sputering and surging as we we were riding one day. Limped to a dealer. They checked the usual suspects then saw the manifold leak.
Well after 17 days in the shop, I picked her up yesterday...boy was I glad to have 'er back. So as it turns out post #2 (klc997) had it right - fuel pressure regulator. As much as I wanted to troubleshoot and do the work, in the end I just didn't have the time or skills to do it myself.
I ended up replacing the fuel lines, fuel regulator, and fuel filter. I also had to buy a new battery. All totaled it cost me $550 bucks - I'm ok with that.
Thanks to everyone who offered up suggestions, maybe someone can learn from this experience.
