Question When to Use Compression Release?

What compression ratio should you install compression releases? I've heard anything over 10:1

That is a number that gets thrown around a lot. Really depends on the cam as the motor never sees the static number. What it sees is corrected compression or CCP. Big boyz has a calculator for comparing cams and their ccp numbers.

I believe the 103's that have them as standard crank over between 195-200. I'd have 'em in anything that is over 190.

If you are already having work done on the heads I would say just put them in. They are not that expensive. I put them in with 10.5.1 compression on my previous motor.

What year is your bike. 2013's 103's already have automatic compression releases. If you look between the heads, if you see a wire coming out from under the lower rocker box cover in the center going back into the wire loom around the throttle body, that is the wire going to the ACR. also if you take out the spark plug and look through the hole in the head behind the spark plug, you can see the round ACR sticking up from the head.

Stock 103s crank about 195 ccp and the motor company puts auto compression releases in them. They wouldn't do it if they didn't have to. So ya ought to have them and use them if ya are are cranking near 190+...
